It COULD have been a bad ground, but the more common problem is a coil going bad, often from water/oil contamination. More likely on the 4.0 than the 4.2.

If that sounds possible, there are posts about this and the usual ways to fix it - all DIY and cheap

Check my recent posting in "general tech. help" regarding the autobox. The symptoms you describe match exactly and uncannily those of torque converter clutch shudder excepting you're getting a different sound. Worth a try for nothing!
