Noise from front nearside wheel

Hi,
Hope someone can help me with a noise problem on my S type.
About 2 months ago I noticed a slight humming noise (best way I can describe it) coming from the front nearside wheel.
Noise is noticeable from 20mph upwards and gets louder as I corner, loading that wheel, but gets less when cornering the opposite direction. Noise is independent of gearor engine revs, and is just as bad when in neutral.
Noise has got louder and louder over the last couple of weeks until I could bear it no longer.
Suspected a wheel bearing problem so took afriend of mine out in it who is a Landrover Mechanic. He agreed it was classic wheel bearing failure noise.
So, new front wheel hub and ABS sensor assembly duly purchased and fitted.
Unfortunately the noise persisted, but maybe a little less than before (but hard to judge).
This had us puzzled so we swapped the front wheels to eliminate a wheel or tyre problem - noise stayed with the same nearside hub.
Only conclusion we could come to is that we were unlucky and had a faulty newhub. So contacted the supplier who very kindly supplied a fresh hub free of charge on the understanding I return the initial hub when it was removed.
New hub fitted and STILL the noise persists.
Scratching our heads now. Surely two faulty hubs is too much of a coincidence.
Before I give up and take it to a main dealer (stopping by at the bank to re mortgage first), does anyone have any idea what this could be.
Model is a 2002 ST type 3.0 v6 sport with about 55K on the clock.
Any suggestions very gratefully received.
Ian
