If you've got a smartphone, buy an ELM327 bluetooth mini from ebay for less than £6 and install the free Torque app on your phone.

If you have an iPhone, do not buy the Bluetooth version of the ELM327 tool. Instead, buy the WiFi version as the Bluetooth is incompatible with most iPhones. And, unfortunately, there is no iPhone version of Torque that I know of, so you'll have to find a different OBDII app if you're using iPhone. There are several available in the app store.

Get the bluetooth as suggested by Corv. Install Torque app on your phone.

Be aware some elm clones won't work on the early cars, the ones without the electronic Park brake.

Some do some don't it's pot luck.
