Default Odometer Ripoff by Jaguar Dealership

Before any Jaguar S-Type owner (mine is 2000)has their hard-earned money (approximately $1500 in San Diego, California) ripped off by the Dealerreplacing their Instrument Pack when the Odometer reading is displaying the wrong number and/or displaying garbage (displayed as dashes)in some of the fields, the owner should first try to reset the Jaguar onboard computer which stores and displays the odometer readings. In my case, I had lost 85,000 miles on the odometer which made my car appear much more worn (and thus muchless valuable)than was accurate.

The simple way for the owner to perform this reset is to cut the power to car computer by disconnecting one of the leads to the car battery. I disconnected mine for a 24 hour period, to make sure to dissipate all electric charge in the car (full 24 hours disconnection may notbe necessary). When I reconnected the car battery and then inserted the car key and examined the odometer series of readings, they were all back to normal. I then re-configured the presets in the radio and then, all wasfixed.

Interestingly, I had the vehicle at the local dealership here and asked them specifically to cut the power and see what happens before proceeding, and they simply refused to do so and demanded the full $1500 to replace the Instrument Pack. They stood their ground in this posture for a 4 full days impasseuntil I was forced to take back the car un-fixed.

Clearly, the dealership was trying to rip me off. Do not be fooled. Stay away from the dealership unless the car is in warranty and the part to be replaced is borne by the dealership and Jaguar US headquartersin New Jersey. If they are determined to bankrupt Jaguar between them, let them. But hang on to your own hard-earned. That money is yours; you earned it.

Perhaps these Jaguar or other car dealerships should stay out of claiming to perform 'service' or 'fixing the car' and simply sell parts.

Other local service shops or 3rd party service shop chains (e.g. Meineke, Midas etc) seem to have superior diagnostic skills and confidence to attack problems you have in a car, figure out what specifically is wrong, and fix the problem.

The dealerships seem to see their role as simply 'replacing parts', whether they fix the problem or not. They will continue to replace parts on your car and bill you or the manufacturer for the parts and the labor until you tell them the problem is fixed or tell them to stop, so you can take the car to a 3rd party service shop.
