Default Oil change really 10K?

The manual says synthetic oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. I travel a lot for work so I don't hit the 10K in 12 months. A couple of times when I have changed the oil the service people said don't believe the manual, you should change it more often. Every 4 months.

Any opinions out there? I don't mind changing it more than once a year, but every 4 months seems excessive given the manufacture recommendation.

If you are only using the car less than 10k a year I would do it like they said, once every 4 months. That is only three times a year. There are a bunch of pollutants that will sit in the oil and do damage if the car sits a lot. Any collector will tell you, a car that sees very little use should be on the same severe duty maintenance schedule as someone who puts on 30k a year. My Dodge gets two changes a year, and it is lucky if it does 500 miles in a year. Once in the spring and again in the fall.

reddwarf, I to have to let my vehicles sit at times. I stick with changes at the 3K mile interval. You can push it out to 4K miles. The big thing with oils is not letting them sit for long periods of time cool. They tend to gather water and this leads to rusting. This is very abrasive. But, if you are driving it atleast once a week, all should be good and you can get away with up to 5K mile changes. Granted, I don't trust oils out that far. So, I am sticking with 4K mile changes on my jag. But then, I am using conventional oils.

Thanks for the replies! I do drive the car at least once a week. Typical week is driving the car to the airport, driving it home later in the week and a couple of short drives on the weekends. I have used only synthetic oil per the Jaguar recommendation.

I had a new VW in 1990, and a few after that, the oil change spec was 10,000 i was driving around 30,000 miles a year and the car got two changes a year, I had it up to around 90,000 with no grief for your Jag I'd go with twice a year for a compromise.
