Talking Old Jaguar owner stepping up to an S Type

Morning all,

My first post on this section. I have the "older" Jaguars.

Weeeell, the spouse just sold her XJ-S, and is in withdrawal, which as we husbands know is "not a pretty sight".

She has spotted a 10/2001 S Type SE 3ltr with 119k kms and it fits her budget.

I have read for 2 days all the stuff on here, and dont seem to find any glaring issues with these cars, AM I RIGHT????.

Obviously, once we arrive interstate and drive it, the brain will settle down a bit, it is a Jaguar after all.

I am aware of the transmission issues, it has receipts for 2 fluid changes in its life, has to be good.

The books are all up to date, it has the 2 keys, and they both operate the car, another plus.

The sway bar "D" rubbers have been replaced in the last year, another plus.

Sooooo, if anyone has any glaring issues I need to look at, please let me know, coz if I get it wrong, the nagging will be worse than a fleet of OLD V12's that dont run.

Thanks in advance as always.

Welcome over to the S section Grant.

You are right there are no huge issues, especially compared to he V12s.

Trannys can be a problem but it sounds like yours has been looked after, heater valves, air leaks etc are the usual gremlins.
Cam chain tensioners should be ok but might be worth looking at for peace of mind.

Welcome Aboard Grant !!...
Ahhhh The old V12 XJ-S... I too, had an XJ-S... A beautiful Black 89 Convert. That I bought over the internet.

The fella (from Michigan) said it had a slight ticking noise... possibly a sticking valve. Having worked on V8 heads before, I figured it would be a piece-of-cake.

Yeah... I can hear you laughing clear over here in Oregon. Needless to say, anyone familiar with V12's knows the pain in the pocketbook I experienced after sadly taking her to someone that had a clue (Jaguar Tech). $4400 piasters later (I also had the hoses and water pump replaced)

I was really growing fond of this vehicle when after a trip to th' Coast, we stopped at a store to get a few things, and when I started it up it went "Clack-Clack-Clack"... She had sucked another valve on the other bank. And the strange thing was... I always kept my attention (I used my good eye) on the heat gauge.

She never got overheated. Anyway... your S Type will be a breeze to take care of compared to the XJ-S.

Here's a pic of my XJ

Fast Freddie,

Thanks for that.

I removed the engine from mine in 2000, to do the torque convertor seal, and the o/rings etc on the oil filter housing.

A few other tidy ups also whilst I rewired the engine bay.

Ended up with the engine TOTALLY stripped, and refreshed internals.

Back on the road in 2002, travelled Australia in that car twice, about 15000km each trip, and what an awesome car they are on the open road.

It was NOT for sale, this guy followed the missus home from the mall, and wanted the car no matter what, claiming he had seen it around for years, but never got close enough to ask. Cash changed hands, emotion kicked in later, now the S will take its place. NO a V12 will NOT be shoehorned into it HAHA.

No more V12's me thinks, way tooooo old and grumpy to maintain one now. I would rather go to Las Vegas AGAIN.

Hey Grant, good to see you're sticking with the brand buddy.

It'll be great to see if you get the help in this section ( I'm positive you will ) as you've helped so many others in different areas in the past.

Presumably you've had a chance to have a good read through the HOW TO sticky at the top of the section??
Loads of good solid reliable info there......

Thanks Jim,

Have done.

4 days of stuff absorbed into the tired old brain, and a bottle or 2 of JD has helped clear a lot of it up HAHA.

Also the many, many pages of "what irks you the most", fair dinkum, I did not realise how important cup holders are to some people.

This will be Jaguar number 16 for me, so I am not phased one bit about cupholders, bluetooth (whatever that is, mine a white/yellow haha), heated seats etc. As long as it goes as good as all the others, and what Jaguar fails in that area, really, the warm and fuzzies will take care of the rest.

Thanks Mikey.

So far the XJ-S is my favourite, then the MK10, then the MK7 (first Jag).

The X300 is still earning its place, but a FANTASTIC car, sooooooo simple to drive/maintain, etc, so time will tell. It might look a tad better after the respray (clearcoat seperating as usual).
