Default PATS madness/electrical mystery Please help!

Hello friends,

I have a pre-facelift 2002 4.0 S-type, (basically a 2001).

One day it would crank but not start, and the red PATS light on the dash was blinking a Code 16. This indicates a communication problem with the ECU and Powertrain Control Module. I read online for advice and I checked all fuses and relays. I discovered that PCM relay #2 in the box under the hood was bad. I got a replacement and the car cranked for about 5 seconds and then started! WooHoo! I drove it around for an hour, came home, parked it and tried to start it again 2 hours later......same problem was back....stuck in anti-theft blinking PATS Code 16, cranking with no start.

I have 3 keys, 2 regular and one valet, I have tried them all.

For anyone who has electrical knowledge, why would the new relay let it start once and but not again?

The closest Jaguar Dealer is 3 hours away.....that is a big tow bill....

Help me jaguar forums.....you're my only hope

Things that may help:
PATS / no-start (in stickies/TSBs / Gus's site jagrepair.com ) - all free
JTIS as it has the electrical guide and troubleshooting/pinpoint tests - free download

a commonish problem is the flap etc where you put the ign key but I don't know if it can cause this

Hi SchickER, try this:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...s-sytem-34107/

The whole thread maybe useful too as it mentions anti tampering and I wonder if it is a simple case of reprogramming the key to the ECU or resetting the ECU?

Worst case scenario is I believe to be the recoding of the ECU by a Jaguar dealer, have you checked fuse #6 or ~18?
Good luck! Stu

Yes but this time it was the other PCM relay under the hood. Now the car runs but recently has been throwing all sorts of codes! The saga continues...

Had the same problem intermittently with my 2002 S Type. Turned out to be a bad relay. But it was relay #14 in the main power box under the hood, not #2. You can get a relay for $12 from O'Reilly auto, I would replace #14 and see if that cures your problem. It did mine.

Hey good information!

Any chance you have a part number from O'Reilly?
