Default Please help won't start

I have been fighting a starting problem for over a month now. First it would not crank over. OK basic right changed starter and starter signal wire. Not that. Took battery to advance auto they said it's good. Took it to auto zone they said bad got a new one started and ran great for two weeks. Ac compressor seized fried the belt. Got new put in and new belt. Ran great for another week. Drove home from work one day ate dinner got in to take boys to scouts and it stopped running a quarter mile from the house. Checked the codes it said both cam sensors went out. Changed them still nothing. Checked fuel nothing at the rails rebuilt fuel pump installed new filters and checked shutoff switch. Getting fuel to rails, it cranks but not starting. Looked at a couple threads and charged battery and did the cable touch reset. Is there anything else anyone can suggest?

I have been fighting a starting problem for over a month now. This is a 2000 Jaguar s-type 3.0l first it it wouldn't crank over changed starter and starter signal wire nope not it. Took battery to advance auto they said it was good then took to auto zone they said it needs replaced. OK in goes a new battery. Started and ran great for a couple weeks. Second the ac compressor seized and burned up the belt. So in goes a new compressor and belt. Again ran great for a week or so. Now it stopped running again this time a couple codes came up. Those pointed to both cam sensors going at same time. Odd I thought so but replaced them. Still not starting. So I checked fuel system. No fuel at rail shutoff good pump not running. So checked electrical got power to pump. Rebuilt pump replaced filters and lo and behold fuel to rails. Still it cranks but no sign of starting. Please if you can help I would love to hear from you.

It's a 2000 with about 80000 miles.

I don't remember the exact code that came up but the two codes were left and right camshaft position sensor malfunction respectively

Yes the old codes would be helpful. Have you attempted to start the car in “N”?

I took the battery out to make sure it was fully charged. No I haven't tried to start in neutral I will try it and keep you informed of the progress.

Put the battery in and attempted to start in both park and neutral and it coughed once but did not start.

If the car is now turning over I would shoot a bit of starting fluid in the intake to see if it will run.

You need to figure out if it's fuel or ignition problems.

Sorry I assumed you had a 4.0 the nikasil does not apply to you. However, holding the accelerator to the floor does. Give it a try.. Bad habit of mine thinking of 4.0. Sorry!!!!!


I would recommend that you do not use starter fluid to start the car starter fluid can and has caused cracking of the intake causing a vacuum leak. Please read this information start the car. I would first charge the battery then hold the accelerator to the floor and try to start the car for a few moments then give the starter a rest then with the accelerator to the floor try starting it again and let up on the accelerator and see if it starts.

Still won't start pulling plugs found a bit of crud on them replacing them now and will try to start after that.

Also I found a rubber vacuum coupler that was cracked couldn't find a new one so I made one.

Ok well changed the plugs and cranked it over. I can smell gas on plugs and checked the spark believe me it's a strong spark but still won't start. I can almost swear the timing could be out.

Any vacuum leak can prevent starting. Flooding does too.

The pre-2003 3.0 has a couple of hard to locate (for those who've not read this site) hoses that perish and leak.

When attempting to start the car does it sound like you have compression (rotating freely)? I would like to know the codes you had and not what you were told they mean to get a better feel for what is going on with the car.

Because I do not have that information and it does sounds like cylinder washing I am going to attach a link for that. Give it a try and see what takes place. If you get the car started I would change the oil and add a can of Restore to your oil, you can get this from any local auto parts store. Be sure to do this in a well ventilated area.

Bore wash is when the engine loses compression due to fuel 'washing' the cylinder liners so clean the compression rings lose effectiveness. Treat it initially like a flooded engine by holding the gas pedal to the floor whie cranking. If that doesn't work, remove the plugs for cleaning, put a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder, reinstall the plugs and try cranking again as though the engine is flooded.
