Cool Porous Transmission Pan

Hello, All,

On a recent recent oil change visit with my 2007 S Type, my Jag dealer imformed me my transmission pan was beginning to leak. I asked if it was a gasket, and he stated the pan is a composite material which seeps over time.
Repair estimate is $1238.00. I see pans and gaskets all over the web cheap.

Am I getting a straight story from this dealer?

mate,

Check through the forum, the pan is a combined pan and filter and the recommended change (with oil and the mechtronic sleeve) is 60,000 - 100,000km.

I did mine a few weeks ago for a cost of about AU$600 (US$550) using the top quality Lifeguard 6 oil. It should take you about 4-5 hours the first go, probably a little quicker after that.

Just for the pure comic relief, I did get a quote from my local Jag dealer, wait for it... $4700. $1000 of that for the oil alone!!!

If you can swing a spanner, give it a go. There is a good thread in the S-Type stickies which will tell you what you need, where to get it and how to do it.

Good luck...

Many Thanks,

I did not feel it made sense that a plastic pan would be permeable. I am new here, so I'll follow any and all leads.

I would look carefully. The sleeve that is mentioned above tends to seep/leak. The transmission fluid runs down and collects on the black plastic pan. I doubt the pan is leaking itself.

Change the pan/filter, electrical sleeve, upgraded pan bolts.

Thanks, I take it a changeout of all components is necessary. My Jag dealer did say I do not need the upgrade bolts for my VIN.

Can I strongly recommend having some spares. They torque in at 8NM and shear off at about 8.1NM. Took me two days to extricate the remaining piece and replace...

I used 10 new bolts out of 24 as some rounded of removing and most required the gentle persuasion only a cold chisel and 10lb mallet can provide.

Cheers,
