Purchased an STR on Saturday.
Yeah.
I finally purchased a 2004 S-type R. I needed a more reliable steed, and it was good timing because my van has developed an electrical issue and wont charge the battery.

These are far from reliable vehicles. However, as a dealer and owner of a repair shop, they are better than a royal flush when it comes to income. Get ready for AC, cooling, differential, climate control, differential and transmission issues.
Transmission: rebuilt 2 months ago.
Engine: Long block/engine rebuild, 10K miles ago
Supercharger rebuilt about 10K miles ago. (Stiegemeier)
Cooling lines and leaks fixed about 10K miles ago.
A/C serviced about 5K miles ago.
Fuel pump replaced about 3 months ago.
Differential?

A few uses of Search will turn up almost no differential issues. Not really many STR trans issues, mainly minor leaks easily fixed. Almost no A/C apart from DCCV and what it can damage - both cheap and easy fixes. Lots of crazy stuff from those who've been overcharged (or maybe done the overcharging!), though. Clearly shops would (and do) charge big bucks when cheap fixes would be the right things to do
STRs are pretty good reliability-wise, but the gouging that goes on can make that not appear to be so.

Frankly, I don't believe you about the repairs. Who would buy a car that has had that much work done?
I had one in the shop early this month, same year, same powertrain. Out the door was about $7500.

Nice color! These cars really don't have that many issues, or more than any other used car. If there's work you aren't going to do yourself, don't let a shop take advantage of you and overcharge because its a Jag.
I've got an '06 STR that I've had for 3 years and I've put 43,000 miles on it. All I've had to replace is a O2 sensor. Denso brand that I paid $28 for and swapped it out myself. If you look at the 2009 JD Powers Most Reliable list, you'll see that Jaguar tied with Buick for most reliable brand. The study was on 2006 models. I can't imagine there would be too much diference between the '06 and '04 except for variable valve timing. But it's all about preventative maintenance. Make sure the fluids are full and clean. Turn the radio off every once in a while and listen to the car for any noises out of the usual.......people that just "live with it" are the ones that end up with issues.
