Default Question About Touch Up Paint

Actually, 2 questions.

What is the easiest product to use for small scratches (by an amateur, me)?

Where can I order it from other than the dealer?

Bonus question: Will aftermarket paint match - Quartz LHK?

Thanks

The best product to use will depend on what type of damage you're trying to touch up.

There are two basic methods. Standard "brush and cup" type or the "Smear or squeegee" method.

For general road rash with many small chips the smear method works great on dark colors.
A product like Dr. Colorchip is great and can be ordered in Quartz.

For larger chips or deep scratches touch up with a regular solvent base paint is the way to go. You can apply several layers of color followed by several layers of clear coat. Once the clear dries as a high spot you can block sand with a hard block and 2000 grit. Then hand polish with 3M Perfect It.
It may take a few days for the layering.

The biggest secret to success is to use a fine tip applicator like a small artists brush or a toothpick. (I use a flow pen lettering tool to put down .07 drops)

The challenge with any metallic is that although the color mix may be right on, when you apply the paint the metal flakes won't lay down the same way as when the panel was sprayed. From some angles the match will be great. Others it will appear off.

Other than a dealer touch up stick you can order from paint scratch dot com. Or try a local paint supply store and have a half pint of solvent base coat mixed up. Then use a clear touch up stick on top.

Not much to add ... other than dealer touch up paint is usually lacquer based paint which dries and sticks a lot better. Use a fine brush with extremely low paint amount. i.e. when you take out the brush, the paint should not be dripping and twist it to a fine pencil point. The paint you would get mixed at your local body supplies shop might be water based and be a pain to level out. You can order 'Langka' paint leveler from autogeek.net . or their paint chip repair kit , think about 40$ for the whole kit.LANGKA Complete Paint Chip Repair Kit: Repair scratches on your car without a professional paint job! touch-up paint, scratch repair kit, chip repair,

or you could use just the blob remover. If you're in FL, you could prolly get it the next day after ordering !

Thanks for the tips, guys.
Cooper, sounds like you must own a body shop but your methods sound a little too complicated for me. I guess I'll just get the dealer paint with the little brush and do the best I can.
