I have a 2003 S-Type 3.0 and under the car I had a plastic part start to drag on the ground and scrape. The part is about 4 foot by 3 foot and it looks like it is part of a covering for underenath the car. Not really sure if this is explaining it or not. I ended up removing the 4 bolts on the part and taking it off. What I am wondering is if this is something that was protecting an important part of the car like the brake lines or something. I figure one of the more tech guys would know the answer to this one.

Most likely the pan that goes under the engine like a belly pan. The securing system is pretty poor ,with a kind of clip on the rear edges. It should secure with more than 4, in the center and at the edges.

 

Do you know if it protects anything improtant on the car? In otherwards if I was to leave it off and not put it on would it be a super bad thing?

 

i would replace it
it keeps damaging road debris from entering into the eng compartment
secured correctly would be 3 10 mm bolts on the frt
2 phillips screws behind that
and then 2 more 10mm bolts in the back
replace it and have peace of mind
