Default Quick help: found car to buy 500 miles away

Hello again, I found a V8 s-type exactly like I want but it's 500 miles away. I've never bot like this. Salesperson said it's VGC, non smoker, etc. Blue book says it's priced about $700 below their blue book value of $20700. How much do I offer them, especially over the phone? I hate to ask them to come down on price without having seen it. Any pointers? Many thanks.

We don't have anywhere near enough info to help you decide what to offer, we don't even know what year it is, miles, etc.

If you are gonna spend $20 grand, I'd highly recommend you drive the 500 miles and take a good hard look, with the intention of taking it home if the deal is what you want, or turning around. It's still nice weather in Ohio, good roadtrip time of year!

My apologies, I mentioned its priced at a dealer for $700 below what KBB says it's worth, which is $20700. I thought perhaps i could get some ideas of how close a used car dealer is to kelley blue book. Having said that it's an 06 s-type 4.2 with 35k miles. It's also the color I want, light green, which is pretty rare. Wifey not fond of the drive, so might be a genuine pita.

Jim where abouts is it located? One of the members here may just go out on a limb for you and check it out in person, within a certain distance.

Rick, it's in marietta Georgia at malones automotive, 271 powers ferry road. I was going to do everything possible to get there tomorrow, since my schedule would allow it, but man what a hike. Might even take a truck & trailer. Having said that, if someone is close by, that would be great.

I know that location is fairly close to Buckhead Imports which is a forum sponsor. Might want to give them a call to see if they do inspections and how much they would charge. You can locate them on the web. Good Luck

Years ago I lived in Marietta, GA, and know where Power Ferry Road is. $20K for an 06 (nearly 6 years old) V8 "S" is a hefty price to pay, regardless of its low mileage. Try a 60K mile 400 hp S-Type R for a little more than half that price ($65k new but yours for $13+k)?...Their asking too much bro. Save the gas money for something worth driving 500 miles.

Jim, looks like a nice vehicle except for the front on shot. The hood line doesn't match up to the bumper skin line between the left fog light and grill.

As for the Kelleys price, they are right about being $700 under BB, but then again Malones are saying it is in excellent condition which is now incorrect!

I am curious about the wheels as well, they don't seem right, but I am not sure about the wheel options for the 06's.

BTW I would offer more like low $17,000's and I do mean low.

You guys are frickin awesome. It is the one at malones, and mike I put a call into buckhead, thank you. Having said that, I did notice the hood line seemed strange. Although not the final word, both car fax and auto check indicated no accidents. Bfs- help me understand why you think the price is way too high? (that's was my original question, really - how much to expect them to knock off.) even the true market value thing puts it right at $20k. Also - I'm not intd in the "r" version. I keep my cars well into the 120k-range and replacing a supercharger is hella expensive. The one 4.2 I drove was ridiculously fast; plenty for me.
Maybe I'll take a breath and wait a little longer. But keep the dialogue coming. Thanks again.

I agree $20k is high. While the used car market is strong, the used late model Jag market rarely is. I find Rick's suggestion to be more in the ballpark.

I take Carfax with a grain of salt. Many folks nowadays are onto it, not claiming anything on insurance to avoid the vehicle history...if their deductable is anywhere near the cost of repair.

Too bad George isn't on here, or you could ask him to run the auction pricing for that year and model, highs/lows, etc.

Great suggestion by Mountaincat.

I think we have a few other members in that area, his name escapes me....

Maybe a quick flight down instead of the drive?

They're great cars but even so - at least in the state of the car market here - they're much easier to buy than to sell. I'd offer low. They have to make it worth your while.......

I won't get into the price cause the other guys know more than me in that area. I'll just say that IMO Carfax is way overated. For the most part they just search police reports and DMV databases. A car could be in a one vehicle accident, driven home, repaired and no one would ever know. With the privacy laws today, I not so sure insurance companies would be that eager to relinquish claims data. I have heard of more than one instance where significant damage was repaired but the Carfax came back clean. Everytime they show a mileage descrepency, they state it could just be a clerical error.

I have paid for a few in my Vette search but take the report with a grain of salt. I think it's a bit of a racket (what isn't these days) and an excuse for dealers to overprice vehicles that report clean.

To me nothing is better that a good body & paint guy inspecting it personally. When you do this stuff all the time the mistakes and poor work are easily spotted.

Jim, I made a comparison of a mid-mileage STR as a means to contrast the $20K the dealer is asking. Though the book value may suggest a comparison to original value, market demand is painting a different story. I say $15-16k max for the low mileage 06 V8 S-Type. The STR's supercharger is super reliable. Perhaps you may like to visit this option again.

I agree. Checking the car-fax shows actual miles of at least 53,941. A quick check of auto-trader shows most all comps at no more than $18,000. The color is another matter. I think you're right about rare. Is the color worth $3,000?

I would not use Kelley Blue book to guage what to pay for a car. Look around and see what comparables go for. Blue book is only used by the banks to see how much they will give you for a loan. A car is only worth what people will pay for it. I feel that 20000 is way to much for a non STR 06. I paid less then that over a year ago for an 05 STR with 60000 clean car-fax. I would definitly talk them down alot.
Also that car that Rick posted I was actually out that way the other day. I live on the outskirts of Raleigh so if you get interested in that one I can run by and snap some better photos and check it out for you. If you are wanting something in the 20000 range I would look for an STR. As crappy as the resale value is on an S type you may be better off with an R and you will at least be happier driving it.

That makes more sense. I was about to say what a weird change of events to be looking at an 06 S type V8 then suddenly jump back a decade and get an XJS. LOL.
