Hi, Everyone.... (I'm new to this site) I just had my 2004 S Type in for service today... (oil change & replacement of turn signal bulb) I was told I would need the front brake pads replaced within the next 1,000 miles. My question: Is this something that can be done myself or something I should have Jaguar do?? They quoted me $385 for just the front pad replacement... rotars and back pads are fine. P.S. To the guy who wrote not to buy a Jag.... I LOVE MY JAG and I willnot think twice aboutbuying another one in the future!

 

You should have no problem replacing the front brakes yourself. The rear brakes can be a little more difficult. You can then shop around for the best deal on pads. I recommend getting ceramic pads to reduce brake dust. The front pads should be under $90. I just replaced my brakes last weekend and bought Akebono Euro pads from rockauto.com. Tirerack.com and advanceautoparts.com are also other sites that I have had good luck with.

I found out that the model of brake pad needed differs even with the same type of car. I have a 03 S-type R and different sites were giving me different part numbers.You should call the dealership,give them your VIN, and ask them to tell you the OEM part numbers for your specific type of car. I then called rockauto.com and they contacted Akebono to verify that I had the correct parts. When the dealership checked my brakes they also said that the rotors were fine. I still decided to have them resurfaced. This costs around $30 per axle and there should be a local parts store that will resurface them for you.

 

uptown girl - ptreder is right, replacing the pads is no big deal.

Something to keep in mind - Jaguar will charge you more than other shops will. Do you know anyone who owns a carshop that you trust that would replace the brakes instead?

I had my front pads replaced by TiresPlus. Normally I wouldn't trust a "one shop fits all" kinda place, but I know the guys that run it , and they're great.TiresPlus charged me $195 total (no turning required.) ...so there are better prices out there.

I got factory Brembo rotors formy StypeRfrom them at a great discount. they also have pads and all other jag parts since they are also a dealer.

 

This is my 4th time trying to respond! Thanks for your help guys! My Dad knows a guy who is supposed to be a really good mechanic and works on race cars as well. I think resurfacing the rotars is a good idea too. I will call the dealership to make sure I get the right parts. You guys are awesome..... Thanks! : )

 

Be careful when resurfacing Jaguar rotors. They don't put a lot of meat on them, so don't cut too much!

 

O..... Maybe that is why they said they don't touch the rotars. They did say they were fine though.

 

I came accross a company called CQUENCE rotors. Are they any good?

 

I only turned the rotors on my rear after I had the pads replaced...and then they started making some squealing noise. I also recommend just replacing the pads...and see where you stand after that. better than 50/50 you won't have to touch the rotors...at least not until next time. good luck!
