Default Replacing OEM radio w/ same style radio, DIY job or no?

2000 Jag S-type V8

Original radio system was drawing on the battery, so had to be disconnected. I went ahead and bought the same OEM radio/cassette etc. console.

My preference would be to install it myself and save money of course, but at the same time, I don't want to ruin antyhing in my car. Has anyone done this before and/or knows whether or not this is a manageable job without a huge risk?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I let my brother take it to the casino tonight (I did make him agree to not gamble away my car), so I can't take any actual pictures of mine, but I should be able to give you the info you need here.

Here's a picture of the actual radio I ordered, which is the same as the one in mine currently. As you can see, there is no chords or anything included.

And here's a picture of what it looks like in my car, but these are from two random ebay listings. As far as I can tell, they both look exactly the same as mine though

if you're radio's are the same exact ones, which it looks like it is, you simply pop off the two side plastic trim pieces and remove the bolts, unclip the wiring harnesses, and plug them into the new radio. Easy!!

It's the same as mine.Exact! Fist disconnect the negative pole (REMEMBER!!) of the battery as precaution.Simply gently pull the two plastic trim pieces lateral + lower plastic trim pieces ( the one with the the two knobs under the AC unit) with a plate screwdriver and loose the 4 screws behind. You will see it's a hexagonal screw.
Then push two fingers under radio under the two knobs near the gear and gently pull all the unit out. If it's stuck don't bother, it's just the glue all around.
Now disconnect first the two AC wires pushing inside the two little plastic clips and remember which is left and which is right.
Now disconnect the antenna , the three plastic leads and finally the CD changer in the rectangular slot and change the radio.
To mount it just do reverse when you inserted.
I will take less than half an hour without loosing money!

If you want to throw the radio away , let me know, I need the green cd changer plug spare part in the rear part of the radio. :-)
So if you push it on ebay, please send me the link..

One last question.
Are You really sure that the radio drains the battery out? Who has told it You?
I have the same problem (battery down every three days with stopped car in the garage) and trying to find a solution).

Regards from Italy

When I disconnect the battery, do I need to disconnect both of the terminals, or just the negative one?

And thanks for the instructions, sounds like I should be able to do it.

Assuming all goes well for me, with this, I'd be more than happy to send you the part if you wanna paypal me $5 or so to cover the shipping, assuming it's a small part.

My battery was draining overnight each night, and the shop I took it to identified two drains on it, which they said was very odd to have two drains. If I remember correctly, one was the ECM or ECU (Electrical Controle Module/Unit) or something like that, and the other was a drain by the radio. They told me that the two combined, would drain it overnight, but by themselves, would probably take three or four days to drain the battery, so one of those could be your problems.

Just as an experimental thing, you may want to leave the radio disconnected, and if the battery still drains, then you know the radio is not your problem.

Hi it is ok if you disconnect only negative pole.
so you were lucky to find that it was your radio the problem for your battery right?
Have you ever tried to disconnect radio only and find (maybe in one week of stop) that no drain of battery has been done by the ECM module?
Regards

P.S. I wanted also to know what are the two standalone buttons on the bottom of the module, below the A/C unit?
I do not have them on my unit. The parking aid kit? Or seat heating control?
Thank You.
Have you do the job? it is ok now with the radio? no drain at all?
Regards

No, never disconnected either of them by myself, but the people at the shop I took it to were able to tell me exactly how much the ECM was draining it and exactly how much the radio was draining it, so I took their word for it.

As far as the installation goes, I've got it finished, haven't put the trim pieces and bolts back on yet though, waiting to know for sure that it'll start up for the next week or so as they told me the radio by itself would take a good 3-4 days to drain the battery. No problems yet, so hopefully it will continue to start.

And in mine at least, the bottom two buttons are heated seats, which I believe is an option, so that may be why you wouldn't have them.

Hi Pal, thanks for the info. So, as much as I have understood, my info helped You to save money with a D.I.Y. job! Congratulations! So You now have a car that drains the battery in 3-4 days, right?
Please tell me the results, i will be waiting for them since it's also my problem for now without a definitive clue. Ciao

Well I'm hoping there's no drain at all with the new battery, but we'll see...
