Default replacing the r badge

I have see some of the newer R badges for sale which are self adhesive was wondering if the older s type r badges are self adhesive and if so would slightly heating the area be the best way to remove them as I would like to upgrade to the newer ones

On our '04 XJR the R emblems were just attached with foam-core double-sided tape. To remove them without risk to the paint, you can use a piece of nylon fishing line or music wire (like a guitar E or B string) like a cheese cutter, to saw through the foam core of the tape behind the badge.

Once the emblem is removed, use a combination of low heat (a hair dryer is safer than a heat gun), a fingernail or small plastic scraper, and a mild solvent like 3M Adhesive Remover to remove the tape residue.

To help the new emblem adhere well, wipe the body with wax remover or denatured alcohol and allow to dry before pressing the badge into place.

Cheers,

Don

anthawk - fyi i picked up some of those knock off badges on eBay for $4 a pop. they come in a nifty little ziplock sack, with backing double sided precut tape and they have two little flanges in the back where you could install a couple of mounting bolts. Only drawback is that the back side is not flat but concave.

FYI....I put those exact ones on mine. 9 months later, the red and green paint was gone on 2 of them. The badges did stay in place, so the tape was fine. Moral of the story: Buy a spare set, since they're cheap. A used original, as rare to see on EBay, goes for $50.
