Default Restricted performance after restart

Hullo All, I have looked high and low on the website for an answer to this problem, with no luck, so here I am asking in the generic area.
If I drive my 2003 S Type R a short distance, say 100-1000 yards, or even reversing it out of the garage for a wash just up the drive way (25 yards) the next time I restart the car I get a restricted performance notice on the dash.
If I drive the car for around half an hour, or let it idle for the same period, then turn it off and restart the warning has cleared, and does not return.
The electrics have been checked Alternator OK, charging OK, battery OK (new one only 6 months old)
Can anyone help please?
P.S. the car is running well with no errors on the hand held ODB, it doesnt matter if the car is cold or hot either.Fuel economy is great 9.2-9.6 litres per 100 Kilometers.

Thank you
Jim

As you figured, it's a fault. I'm not sure what's wrong. Maybe a sensor is not quite right and that's when it shows up. You can read a lot of them (OBD "live data") and could work through looking for any that's suspect. I'd start with IAT, ECT and so on.

I drive mine like that all the time and it has never done that.

If you're lucky a tech will have seen and diagnosed this before and may help.

Jim, ditto to jagv8 and...you mentioned an occurance after washing the car. Water will run off the windshield, down the cowl and find its way to the rear of the motor near the throttle body (TB), where the S's TB electrical connectors apparently aren't impervious to moisture. Let us know if issue doesn't resurface with a period of maintaining her dry.

Thanks guys, the error occurs without washing the car, just starting and running the engine for a short time causes the RP indication on restart. No error codes either! By the way whats IAT and ECT?

My 03 STR used to do that exact same thing! I went through everything to try and resolve it... I replaced the battery all the usual things, ended up being a bad temp sensor and a failed thermostat...

When you drive short periods (ie backing out of the garage for a wash) you dont get up to temp and the failed sensor ends up throwing the Restricted Performance as a result.

If you pull the codes (autozone can do it) you will find a lingering code for temp sensor in memory... Hopefully you wont need a thermostat as you cant repace the thermostat without replacing the entire housing... I ended up replacing all the above and if memory serves me correctly it was about $350 or so...

Good Luck and definitely let us know what you find out!
