Reverse Gear Engages harshly

Reverse Gear Engages harshly
Hi all,
I've noticed that when putting my car into reverse, it goes in quite harshly and causes the car to try and leap back.
I've tried putting it into neutral for a few seconds first to see if that helps.
Oddly though, when I changed my negative battery lead, the gearbox engaged smoothly for a while.
What could this be...Pre 2002 gearbox woe, or just a firmware upgrade needed?
