Pressing the sports mode button causes the transmission to upshift at a higher RPM- if the car is being driven in a sporty manner.

As Mikey said.

With the S button lit up the transmission "holds" the upshift slightly to allow the engine to rev higher and give that "sporty" feel.

It also sharpens the "downshift", so the transmission drops down a gear quicker/sooner, again to giving that "sportier" feel.

I use the S mode when driving up longish steep hills, as the 5 speed in ours will simply "hold" a lower gear for the duration. Without that mode the transmission is constantly changing up/down thru the gears.
