S-Type 2.7D engine banging loudly as if it is about to scatter
Uh oh... my dear fellows,
My lovely green jag has been making a lot of noise today. Literally. After driving about 40 miles today it started to sound like a bunch of bolts in a juicer banging against the table.
Here's an MP3: Playing: Jag_Engine_Sound.mp3 - picosong
2004 S-Type Diesel 2.7 Auto
114k on the clock
5 days ago undergone an interim service - the oil hasn't even gone dark yet
less than a year ago at 102k cambelt was replaced at HA Fox in Guildford
Note the noise of metal bits flying around somewhere inside when listening to the mp3. The AA guy told it'll probably need a new engine, as the knocks sound deep and likely coming from the bottom of the engine (basically rendering it a scrapyard candidate).
Could this be related to the cambelt or any of the rollers?
If someone could recommend a good garage in Surrey / Hants which might want to take a look if the engine can be repaired within a worthwhile budget (below £700-ish), please give me a shout!
Will be recovering the vehicle on Monday, so have to decide pretty quickly. Would be a shame to send such a lovely car to the grave...

Thank you Andy! This actually adds some hope that HAFox would have to repair it under warranty...
This brings the question: has anyone dealt with warranty claims before - i.e. whether it is better to have the car inspected at an independent garage first (in this case - engine opened up, so not a 5mins job), or am I solely in the hands of HAFox who will determine whether they feel like fixing it or not?

Thank you again Andy. I think I'm going to do as you suggested and notify HAFox when they open their lines in the morning.
As for warranty - well, I haven't been able to find the exact wording, only the above statements on the official web site. I don't remember signing anything apart from the loan car agreement when the works have started, so it could end up being another little battle (I hope it will not). Surely, if the car was serviced according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule and have only been used privately then warranty should apply... will see.

Yes, right to The Bottom (of the engine), Andy :-(
To the credit of HA Fox they did confirm their £375 fixed price cambelt replacement came with 2 years warranty and didn't resist much when I asked that an independent garage looks at the car first.
A local garage checked the cambelt area - it was all in good shape, which means it's the bottom of the engine. Obviously, warranty would not apply, so I'm moving the car to another garage specialising in engine repairs who will strip the engine and inspect it properly, and then attempt to repair it if it's worth doing. Keeping my fingers crossed.
