Default S type broken wiring

Some nice person broke into my rhd s type and in an attempt to steal the car left this wire hanging down. Could someone please tell me where it is meant to go. Car starts but then immediately shuts down so I guess it's immobiliser linked. Help please

Sorry to hear about the theft attempt, but if it’s any consolation, the security system seems to have done its job.

For the location of the disconnected wiring, we’re going to need some more clues. All I can tell is that it’s inside the cabin. Under the steering column? Glove box? Throw us a bone, please.

How long does the engine run before it dies? As soon as you release the key from the start position? Under certain conditions, the security system inhibits either the starter or fuel pump, and sometimes both. That’s why I’m asking how soon before the engine shuts off. My hunch is it never really runs on it own (fuel pump inhibited) but this could be mistaken for running until the key is released from the start position.

If the disconnected wiring has triggered the security system, a code should be stored. If we can decipher this code, it may provide a YUGE clue where that connector belongs.

Check the operation of the security system indicator light on top of the dash. Here's how the light is supposed to behave if all is good and no faults are present:

First, lock the car with the key fob. Press the lock button a second time to set the alarm system. The horn should chirp once. Watch the little red light. It should flash once every few seconds or so to show the system is armed. Now press the key fob unlock button twice to unlock all the doors. The red light should go out. Now hop in the driver's seat and turn the key to RUN (Not start yet). The red light should come on solid ONCE for about 3 seconds and then go out. If it flashes anything after that, you've got a stored fault and the security system may have inhibited the fuel pump and/or starter.

If the light continues to flash, observe the pattern for the two digit code. For example, 1 flash, pause, and then 3 flashes translates to code 13.

The loom appears to be comprised of four wires.
It is a bit hard from your initial photo to see, but can you confirm the wire colours please.
Looks like they are the perhaps:-
White/Red stripe
White/Purple stripe
Brown/White stripe
Yellow/purple stripe

I can't find the above colour codes or similar in the wiring schematic for the 2002.5 model, but your VIN might indicate earlier production in 2002 which might be a different schematic.

Also the white four pin plug is still docked into that black plastic assembly.
Any markings or reference details on the black part at all?
Can you post some more detailed photos of the black part so we can see possible damage or what physical relationship it might have to another assembly.

With that very helpful nudge in the right direction (referring to the 2001 S-Type schematic I could quickly find online), the wiring colours (observed from the photo) almost exactly match those listed as going to the variable assist steering column position feedback potentiometers via connector CS4.
I might be wrong Jeremy, but three out of four are a direct colour match, so could be a darn good place to start looking.
I would assume if it is the wiring and plug to the potentiometer assembly, the potentiometer assembly might have now been broken.

The neanderthals that tried to relieve you of your ride would have probably just reached up under and hauled on the first wires they could get their mitts on.

I bet you’re right. However, I don’t think a problem in that circuit would cause the engine to shut down or trip the security system. In that case, there may be other damage in addition to the harness hanging down.

Still waiting to hear back from the original poster in response to some earlier questions.

What code is flashing?

When exactly does the engine shutdown?
