Default S-Type doors will not lock with fob

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Just picked up a nice 2.5 V6 S-Type from auction but have a small problem with the locking not working. I have done a lot of searching but cannot find an answer.

Both key fobs will open the car and open the boot. However neither will lock the car. I have also noticed that pressing the red light switch on the fob does nothing but in the handbook it mentions "where fitted" so maybe that button does not apply to my car.

I can lock the car manually with the key and all doors definitely lock.

When I remove the key from the ignition the steering wheel pulls away from me so I think the cars knows that the key has been removed so not an ignition switch fault. I have tried squirting some contact cleaner into the ignition switch just in case.

One key fob has obviously been rarely used and when I press the lock button I can clearly hear the microswitch clicking so I don't think that has worn out.

I have already tried reprogramming the fobs as one did not work at all when I first got the car and now it does.

I tried some silicone lubricant on the drivers door lock even though it appeared well greased then tried unlocking/locking the doors from inside to work the lubricant in but still nothing.

I've run out of ideas. I will check the fuses tomorrow as it is getting dark now. Does anyone have any ideas what else I could check?

I have a generic code reader but doubt it would pick up a code as specific as a door lock fault etc but I will try that as well tomorrow.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Doors etc have their own modules and need a specialist OBD tool. Debugging this could be rather hard without one. (Or even with!)

It's almost always an actuator/sensor problem and needs the door cards off, pain in the ....

What happens with door lock & unlock inside the car:
1. on door handles (both doors)?
2. on dash?

Hi thanks for your reply.

I tried the tests you suggested and I can lock/unlock all doors using the button on the dash and the buttons on either interior door handle.

One thing that may be relevant, the boot lock button is "pushed in" - there is a hole you have to put your finger into to push the button although it does still work fine. I need to take a look at that but it is raining today.

Would a normal garage have a good enough code reader or is it a specialist Jaguar one?

Any further ideas gratefully received!

You'd have to ask the garage.

I fixed the boot lock issue, it was just the button was loose, I screwed and glued it back in place. I doubt that was in any way related to the locking issues.

I've heard there is a place locally who can test key fobs to see if they are emitting a signal I might try that next just in case the lock button on both fobs is broke (unlikely but worth a shot)

Another quick update - for people viewing this thread in the future it is fixed and this is how I did it:

Open the keyfob up as per the instructions in the handbook for replacing the battery in it.

There is a small circuit board with 4 microswitches. Spray this with electrical contact cleaner, leave 10 mins to dry, reassamble and presto I can lock the car again.

Cheers!

I don't know what problems you are having but have you tried electrical contact cleaner on the keyfob circuit board? Its a 10 minute job, very easy to do and worth a go.

Yes, I've tried all sorts, I think it may be the module, or hopefully a connection.
It's on the list, not near the top though.
