My guess would be that the door lock barrel or the ignition barrel has been changed, perhaps as the result of an accident repair or attempted theft and your keys do not fit the door lock.
To test this try your keys in the boot/trunk lock. (The boot/trunk lock is above the numberplate under the 'jaguar' plinth.)
If they work in that one it is only the door lock that has been changed, if not it is probably the ignition lock, or both!!
I am not 100% sure about the Jaguar ones but I know with the Ford locks of this type they can be taken apart and the tumblers re-aranged so that your key will work.
You will need to 'read' your key number by studing the dents and dips to do this and the tumblers are then numbered.
Does the main beam button on the fob work as it should? (This is the one they gets the least use.)
You could try changing the batteries in one of the remotes?
However you may well find that the actual switch mounted on the circuit board inside the fob is what is faulty. If you are ok at soldering these can be replaced, or you could swap the main beam switch for the unlock switch.
This is easier than adding a new fob.
You can only add new fobs to your 2005 s-type by using the jaguar SDD software. Unlike the X-type there is no other way to do this.
For the S-type you need version 130 at the latest as later versions are either unstable or just do not work with the S-Type.
This version dates to 2012 and it is unlikly that any dealer has kept this as all later updates were web based and needed for newer models.
When adding new fobs using SDD the process involves removing all the existing ones from the system then adding the new ones and any working old ones back on again.
Mellow
Is this info valid for previous models also? I have a 2002 S-Type I'm trying to get an aftermarket key/remote for. My local Keysmith says he cant do it, yet I see threads on the forum stating that they have had new flip type key/fobs for the S-Type. If I can find out what the definitve answer is to program the fob I can try to get my bloke to do it. He tried a programming sequence turning the key in the ignition but it didnt seem to work. Anyone got an answer please?
Oh BTW, I have a mate with a Ford 04 Transit & the fob internals of my remote are exactly the same as his remote, I'd love to get the same flip fob for my car as he got for his Transit via my keysmith. TIA
The car couldn't care less what physical shape etc the key is so long as it fits the locks and has the right transponders (operating at the right frequency).
Given the above you'll also need a dealer tool to tell the car to recognise each key.
Thank you all your help everyone. The update is wonderful:
1) I sent the fobs to Neil at fingazfobs in the UK. He repaired them completely and now all the buttons work well on both fobs. No reprogramming was needed. 29.50 pounds including shipping.
2) I was put in touch with Craig at The Jag Shop in Portland Oregon regarding the problem of not being able to fully insert either key into the door. He suggested the tumblers were probably misaligned and gummed up from lack or use. It seemed possible to me, who ever uses their key when they have a fob? I bought a key from ebay and ground it as he described (photos below). Low and behold I was able to eventually wiggle it all the way into the door lock. I also used a little dry graphite powder, now both keys work in the door! $30 US.
All in all, much better than the $800 the dealer quoted for EACH replacement key. Thanks again everyone.
