S-type motor headed south
I have a 2000 S-type 4.0 with a motor that is headed south. I was wondering what my options are as far as replacing the engine or getting a crate engine with tranny etc etc. I have alot of time and money in the car so I do not want to scrap it like I probably should at this point. Thanks for the help happy holidays
It'll likely be difficult to find a low mileage salvage 4.0, as this motor last saw production in late 2001. Search salvage yards for a healthy specimen and be sure it comes with a carfax and warranty.
What are the symptoms leading you to this conclusion and how many kilometres/miles are on the engine?
Just so you know. Any 4.0 V-8 at this time will need the timing chain tensioners changed. All of them-primary and secondary. Not cheap and not easy to do!
With the low prices for the much improved 2003 and up S Types I would get rid of the older model S Type. You have not mentioned transmissions but the 2003 and up got a much better 6 speed unit.

The engine has about 150,000 miles on it. Oil shoots out the breather valve and is making some strange noises that clear up once warm but they are still there. I agree finding a decent engine that is 10+ years old is going to be hard to find. For that reason i was thinking of something in the ford crate engine neighborhood. Suggestions welcome
If the noise is a rattle when cold, the timing chains and tensioners need to be replaced. Depending on the service history, a compression check would probably be in order to determine the health of the engine prior to deciding on what course of action to take.
With all the modules I don't think anything but another Jaguar (not Ford) 4.0 engine is an option and price-wise it may not be a good one, sorry.
I don't know if the LS "3.9" is a 100% direct fit but it's essentially the same engine.

I read up on changing the tensioners and chain and i really cant justify spending 1500-2000 on the engine when it may be done anyways. How much does a compression test cost? If i buy a salvage car of some sort with a different engine in it and all the elecdtronics could it be put into the jaguar, im sure anything is possible with enough time and money though. This is frustrating, I love my S-type but this could be the end
A new engine swop is going to cost more than that.
Head over to the XK and XJ sections to read about tensioners and how to deal with them.
It sounds like you need to figure out why the oil is shooting out first.
I'm with JagV8 on the engine swop, unless it's a like for like swap the $s will be racking up again.
