Hmm. Reading this thread make me realize that either the prior owner, or a technician, discarded my under tray (or trays -- it sounds as though there may be more than one?), since I've been able to change my oil with no problem. I'm inclined to not replace them, since I've been driving the car for two years and have had no particular reason to miss them...

 

If you have no issues getting to the oil plug and filter, then yes the cover below is probably missing. Mine is also not there and have searched various times to get another with no luck. as time goes on, harder to find parts like this one. The cover protects a lot of the stuff under the car from taking a hit by anything that might be on the road and thrown up at the engine while driving. Have not had mine for some time after trans replaced and hard to find a used one to replace. I have become very good at swerving away from things while driving though. Here are some pics of the oil filter changer I use front and back. Stretches open to accommodate. Fits on to my 3/8 inch drive ratchet and with a small extension easy to get at my filter. Just use it to remove . I hand tighten the filter and that's it after I rub some of the new oil on the rubber seal of the filter. Never had any leaks from the filter.

 

Wreckers should have them. They're big so local wrecker would be best

Sump bottom on all petrol (gas) S-Types.

 

Right hand side, horizontal axis, not vertical. Need a 13mm socket IIRC and torque it to 24 nm when done. (I guess the argumentative may say "at" the bottom of the sump rather than "in" it.) ;-)
Not sure Pre-2003 are the same, but likely.

It's British for oilpan.

There's a cover under the engine which you will need to remove first.

I've always thought that undertray was introduced at my 2002.05

 

Every 5k miles for my car between oil changes! And just a bit of advice. Use some anti-seize or grease on the screws and bolts! Keeps them from rusting and also aids in removing the shield in the future!
