S-Type R Burning Oil? (( A lot ))
hey guys,
new to forum, Names Corey from Ohio-
Just purchased my Jaguar S-Type R from the 2nd owner - Previous owner got the car with 40k miles, I got it from him with 163k miles.
I received a lot of maintenance with the car so figured I would buy it for the price I paid. Now for the bad, im noticing some oil disappearing and not leaking. Any ideas ?
Prev. owner ran 5-30 conventional oil and changed every 3k miles ( sense the oil is cheap "not synthetic")
I changed the oil 3 days ago with synthetic blend 5-30 and I believe I have already lost a quart somewhere.
Any insight would be great, I have read the forums and read these engines do burn a little oil, but noway it could be this much.
Thanks in Advance,
Corey

I would think with a whole quart missing, some would find its way onto the drive or garage floor by now....but you never know....they do have an undertray that can disguise a leak for awhile....be a good idea to get it on ramps or a lift and pull that and shine a bright light all over the bottom side.
163k miles? Wow they do exist! A little off topic, any idea what the repair history on the car was? Anything major? Does it still pull hard and shift smooth?

I'd refill to the max mark and monitor the level every few days to see what it does. Watch for smoke from the exhaust under hard throttle or while coasting.
In reading your other post, I'd be more concerned about other issues.

P1111 is not a fault and doesn't mean what you posted. It's explained in JTIS and the codes PDF - both free on here. It's a status code and is good.
Sounds about the right amount of oil so please follow Mikey's post next.

The way to add oil on an oil change is to add most of the oil, check that the level is between min and max, start engine, stop engine, let sit for a few minutes, top oil to max.
The reason is that an empty filter alone will take about a third of a quart. You cannot really just add some specified amount and figure that it is correct and repeatable.

I've got a copy of the 2003 S-type owners manual for Canada in front of me. It makes no mention of synthetic oil.
I have read your thread but I am missing how many miles before a quart is gone?
The STR's tends to NOT use oil but you are at 163K! Good job on that!
With my 2005 if I drive it hard I will use a quart in 5K-6K miles. Otherwise I don't see any usage. I have 107K miles currently. I run Mobil 1 5W-20 and change it at about 7500 mile intervals. Too early but that's just me. Jaguar says 10K intervals.
We don't see many STR's at your mileage but ignoring that I usually expect to change valve stem seals after 150K on most V-8's I see. Not always but time and heat do take their toll!
First take the bottom cover off as was posted above and just take a look at things. The tray will hold a surprising amount of fluid and it could be something simple like a small seep/leak at the filter.
