"Spongy" transmission cable on my '05 S-Type
I was having trouble getting my '05 Jaguar S-type into gear. After removing the gearbox and disconnecting the linkage, I find that it switches out just fine when pushing and pulling the link end with my hand but the cable seems a bit spongy and has too much "travel" before catching the next gear. Again, it goes into every gear perfectly but I have to push (and, of course, pull) the linkage connector a little too far distance-wise between "P" and "D". So, when I connect the gearbox and adjust it perfectly for "P", the shifter won't move it far enough to reach "D" and vice versa. Kinda like I was pulling on a spring instead of a cable.
Anybody ever heard of this?

RESOLVED!
I climbed under and noticed a screw that holds a mount locking the cable in place had backed out and was wiggling like a loose tooth. 5 minutes and a pair of pliars fixed the problem. However, while under there, I noiced a little fluid around the plastic trans plug. So I tightened it (I think), wiped it clean and will check for leaks in a few days. It's plastic and I didn't want to strip it. So, I just snugged it up.
Thanks for the help!

What you are seeing is seepage from the electrical connector sleeve, which on the 6HP26 gearbox is fairly common. There must be 3mm clearance between the gearbox body and the sleeve, but if the sleeve is firmly seated, the sealing ring is likely failing.
Replacing the electrical connector sleeve requires removal of the gearbox sump. There are several threads on the subject, including the correct procedure to refill the fluid to the correct level.
