Default Gearbox linkage - need some advice on how to get to it

Hello,

linkage on my car is totally loose, the rubber washers (part UKC1090) that hold the plate are completely gone...

does anyone know if this black piece/cover can be removed so that I can get access to the bolts and plate(and the whole linkage)? There are two bolts on the sides with washers that appear to hold the cover, but I can't see what else is holding it.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you!

And the answer is... yes! This thing can be removed. It is held in place by 8 screws with washers and sealant. Screws in the back are difficult to reach, I loosened two of them, removed one, and one left as is, but was able to slide the cover out. Now I can fix the linkage! Can't wait to see how it shifts "in reality".

Just in case anyone will face the same problem...

I could not find bushings for the plate on the internet, but at local AutoZone I found this bushings kit (yellow one). They fit pretty good but twice the thickness. Basically, I cut them in half and installed.

For linkage - shifter has a 'slide' bearing in it's end. Mine was all beaten-up. This time in Ace hardware store I picked-up what I could find: plastic and bronze bearings. Opted for bronze, but had to cut it a little to fit in(second pic).

Fitted all in, greased, and now gear lever is very tight and car shifts really nice :-)

I am impressed. So much neat stuff to be found at ACE and similar as well as the shelves of the local parts houses. Many have a place for odd stuff that is a gold mine at times. or is it plastic and brass!!!
