STR Oil consumption and hello all
Hello all,
First off - great board. I typically read the JagUK forum and styperregistry and found you all tonight while googling. Great posts and activity here!
I do have a question, though...
My '03 STR with 60K on the odometer consistently consumes oil - anywhere from 1qt per 1,000 to 1,800 miles and has been doing so since I bought it two years ago with 33K. No blue smoke at startup, throttle punches or downshifts and no leaks anywhere to be found. Driving style, while not conservative, is definitely not autocross aggressive. Typical drive is 25 miles each way at 70 to 90mph.
Jag states a Qt per 1,000 miles is acceptable but I'm still feeling a touch uneasy after having never owned a car that consumed this much oil. Is this "normal" or does anyone else have this problem?
On other subjects and if I can be of help:
1> I've had the torque converter replaced (symptoms took 10K to finally result in a gearbox fault).
2> Leaking water on TPS sensor: dealer tried the "patch" fix twice and failed. Ultimately, I came up with a home brewed remedy.
3> Passenger headlight adjustment (not auto-leveling) broke and home fixed that issue as well.
Best,
Eric

RE: STR Oil consumption and hello all
I have not noticed oil consumption on my STR and it has 65k.
ButI did have the same problem on my 2000 M5 it would
consume oil about the same amount as your car and I found out that
many other people had the same problem but then again the STR is a diffrent car.

Some use oil and others don't. If you ask any manufacturer, they will state the same. 1000 miles and 1 quart. I have a 2007 VW and it will go through almost half of its oil between oil changes. A little freaky at first but now i don't even think about it.

Factory Jag Tech,
From your post, I'm hearing this type of consumption can be normal and unless it begins to consume more oil than what it consistently consumes now - then all is well and can be chalked up to production tolerances?
I know there are a lot of variables - I'm just trying to ensure I don't need to go out an unload this thing because consumption NEVER happens in STRs and if it does, it is usually a sign of an impending engine rebuild.
Many thanks,
Eric

RE: STR Oil consumption and hello all
I work on many S-Type Rs and notice that some use more oil than others. I have only had to replace 1 S-Type R motor, and that is the only one that has been done in our shop since they came out in 2003.
They are very strong and durable engines. Just monitor the oil consumption. Change the oil regularly and you shouldn't have a problem. Just because one guy says his doesn't consume oil, doesn't mean that the thousands of others out there don't either.
