Question Strange Engine Moaning (Video)

Hi All,

I've recently purchased a 2001 Jaguar S-Type Sport V6 which has recently been making a moaning noise intermittently after some hard acceleration.

The sound appears to be coming from under the bonnet and in first thoughts sounded as if it was a belt rubbing on something in the engine bay, however after some close inspection this is not the case. It only appears when you apply very slight acceleration and can be heard both inside and outside of the car (more so inside).

You will be able to hear the noise in the below video:

Thanks for taking the time to read this, any help would be much appreciated!

Paul

I'd think that could be power steering pump or idler pulley failing, I'd have it looked at before something bad happens at the worst time..
And how'd Your car get the steering wheel on the wrong side, someone at the factory reading the assembly instructions wrong?

Thanks for the reply Reno,

Would you happen to know if the Idler pulley or power steering pump would cause the sound to be intermittent though? If I youtube some sounds of them failing it appears that it is a constant noise they make.

Also, I have to mention that the power steering is brilliant, the car can be steered with a little finger on the top!

Thanks again,
Paul

Probably the simplest way to determine the source of the noise is to remove the belt and see if the noise stops. If it does, check the bearings on the idler pulleys, water pump and alternator for roughness when spinning them by hand.

I thought for the longest time the cars leaving Castle Bromwich with the steering wheel on the left were mis-built...

Some people would say all English cars were misbuilt, but we know better.
