Help, my "new to me" 2003 Jaguar S type just started making a HORRIBLE rattleing rapping noise from the left engine bank. I will submit a sound file, but I do not wish to cause any harm to the motor unnecessarliy. Motor is 3.0 v6 well maintained with 147k. I bought it and drove it home. Drove for 1 week local. Ran great, then it didnt.

 

The car is new to you. A few questions:

Do you have any idea as to the maintenance history ?

Was a pre-purchase inspection conducted by a technician familiar with Jaguars?

Have you checked the crankcase oil level?

Was it purchased from a dealer or a private party? In many states dealers have to give the purchaser some sort of minimum guarantee (30 days on the power-train, for example).

Are you mechanically inclined? The noise appears to be coming from the side not covered by the intake manifold, which is good news.

I am sure that others will have questions as well, but I would not drive the car until you get this situation sorted....

Your problem could be one of a number of mechanical faults and unfortunately, while there are some pretty sharp members here on the forum, our skills fall short of "laying hands" on the computer screen and receiving a revelation. You are either going to help us to help you, or have the car towed to a (hopefully) competent repair facility.
