tempeture gauge concern
I noticed that when I start my car when the engine is cold the temp gauge needle jumps to the center that indicates op-temp. From there the needlevery slowly goes down back to indicating cold and as the engine warms up it normaly moves to op-temp. Is this normal on the 2006? my 2003 s type doesn't do this. If not what could it be?
whats weird is that when I disconnect the battery and reconnect it it the temp gauge needle doesnt shoot up to the middle of the gauge. I thought it was fixed but it seems after the first start after disconnecting/reconnecting battery the problem comes back.
have you had this problem with your s type? where should I start, is it the coolant temp sensor that sends over to the temp gauge? should there be a check engine light? thanks.
I would go directly to the sensor on the engine first and be sure that you get the correct sensor for the car.

Dave; I've got an 06 with a 4.2 and the gauge stays on the
low side until the car warms up.
Try this: Put the key in the ignition, and, while you turn the key on, press
and hold the button on the left stalk (the one you usually use to move
thru the information re; mileage, etc.). When the key is moved to
the second detent, before actually engaging the starter, you will see the
message ENGINEERING TEST MODE in the message section of your tach.
Now, use the m/kp button to the left of the steering wheel to advance
thru all the modalities. There's a ton of information there. Not only will you see every light on the dash light up, the second push on the m/kp
should take you to the gauge test where all the needles will swing thru
the full range. The temp gauge should be at zero, then swing full right
if the gauge is operating properly.
As you keep advancing the m/kp button, you'll get more information
than you thought possible, including good stuff like battery voltage,
fuel trims, etc. You can access this info with the engine running or not.
Naturally, the running information will differ from engine off. Actual engine
temps are in there if you keep scrolling.
Hopefully, some of this info may assist you in solving the problem. You
can't do any harm nor effect any changes by using this mode.
When you take the key out, the dash will revert to normal information
mode.
