Thumping noise. Help
I was test driving a 2003 S-Type jag. And when I would accelerate it would make a thumping noise when I would let off gas you wouldn’t hear it. What could that be? My friend took it to there mechanic and he drove it. And couldn’t get it to make the noise

i might also mention that the sound was coming from the back of the car. it was like i was running for things in the road you know those thump thump thump kind of noises. but i wasnt, and it didnt do it when i let off the gas. maybe it was just from setting for a while and hadn't been driven? im really thinking of buying it. but just dont want to start off with a hugh repair bill.. its a 2003 with a 3.0 v6 and only has 75000 miles .

Boo Hiss Clover! Arch rivals in girls softball land. Ha Ha, took the championship from them 2 seasons in a row!!!!
I posted using my Android phone. It does 2 thingies by doing so. One it does not show where any one is from and two, no signatures are shown either. I find myself typing with hone, more than sitting in front of a desktop/laptop.

well i did purchase the car 2003 stype 3.0 v6 i havent heard it make that sound yet. but after driving it home about 45 miles then turn around the next day and drove back to the city on my way i kind of thought i heard it once (not for sure) but it kind of had a little hesitation for a second. then the check engine light came on with the restricted performance light, the restricted performance went off then came back on afew minutes later then off but the check engine light is still on. it seems to drive fine i thought it down shifts alittle hard but not bad, i couldnt find where to check transmisson fluid? any ideas what restricted performance light is coming on for? i hope i haven bought a problem child,, it only ha 74,975 miles on it.

Hi Vicky and welcome to the forum.
The car realistically should not be driven with the engine management warning light on. Not until the fault codes have been checked. That will hopefully show where the fault or several faults lie
The car has a modern canbus system which connects all of the main components and functions. It's the cars communication system basically. We use OBD Scanners to plug into the socket to the left or right of the steering wheel and down a bit. Left or right depends on which hand of steering wheel. I'm in England OK. My wheel is on the right and the OBD port/socket is to the left snd down. Please search the site for OBD scanners,?
I use a Bluetooth model with software for my smart phone. Not expensive either if you choose the right one.
But ASAP you need to get the codes checked because using the car might cause more damage.

i got the code for the car it is a PO 171 bank 1 to lean what is a bank 1?. also i figured out (i think) the thumping noise is the transmission pump.. i read that if they are low on fluid they make a thump sound when you accelerate. and she shifts a little hard.. but no way to add fluid it has to be serviced with a flush and fill. $200. so hopefully i can get her in to have that done. do you think that transmission issue and the po171 code could be related or not? i really appreciate all the help on here.

Hi Vicky, none of that explains why the engine management light came on.
I have never heard of a transmission pump on any auto, do you mean the torque converter? The torque converter tends to squeell when fluid is too low because the clutches are slipping.
The only ATF pump you need is a manual one to refill the gearbox with fluid.
Please search the forum for ATF changing, its a very specific job and doing it spot on is absolutely critical.
Start thinking "Jaguar spec" for all fluids and components right down to the light bulbs. This car has a very sensitive canbus system.
Do you have a good independent Jaguar workshop nearby?

no jaguar workshops around here. i've attached a link https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discus...25481_ds545329where i read about the pump. the check engine light code was p0171. the link is about the 20 response down written by someone named James. let me know what you think.
