Default Timing Tensioners

Hi,
I have 1999 V8, which has rattly tensioners and went to limp home mode. I am going to start to dismantle shortly. Do I need to remove radiator etc. to gain access to timing cover?
I intend to at least replace secondary timing tensioners and chains. IKs there any way to check the primary chains/tensioners without removing the timing cover? What should I be looking for in terms of wear?
Is there a strip down procedure available?
Thks,
Brent
