I have a 2005 S Type 3.0 with 89,000 miles, the transmission needs rebuilt or replaced. If I replace it with a used one does that transmission need to be reprogrammed or will it program itself while driving it.

 

They hardly ever fail so care to tell us what happened?

They have inside a computer module (the TCM) and no it won't self-program. They're already programmed and are non-volatile so provided the replacement is near enough the same car I can't see why any extra programming would be needed. (A tech may know better.)

 

Several transmission shop told me the torque converter is bad. Neither shop would just replace torque converter, they said the transmission would have to be gone through at a cost of $4,000.00. Leaning towards used.

 

Odd. Others have had just TC changed as I recall.
