Default Transmission in 2004 S-Type

Hey everyone, I just picked up a 2004 S-Type and was wondering what kind of transmission is in this model year? Also, what kind of fluid does it take? I know this is a "sealed for life" unit, but give me a break...Thanks in advance!

It should have a ZF 6 speed, not sure what type of fluid it takes.

Envy, how would I go about changing the tranny oil myself?

The drain plug is easy to get to. The fill plug is in a tight spot.
You'll need an allen wrench (dont know the size of the top of my head) that you need to grind down so you can fit it in the fill plug.

Putting the new fluid in will be a challange your first time.

Best way is to get a pump and hose to put the fluid in.

If you think you can do all that, let me know and I'll give you more details.

After reading several tranny posts, it appears that changing the fluid will assist in increase life. How often do you recommend doing so for the ZF6? Also can you give more specific of where and how much to grind down the allen?

I'm also interested in this info Envy. I've always done all my own fluid changes for previous vehicles myself, but I'm new to Jag's...Any info is greatly appreciated.

plus the tranny has to be at a certain temp.. if too much or too little fluid is installed... tranny will not shift correctly. need to know exact temp of fluid.. with ids.. to get the perfect amount in there when cold and hot.wiring up a oldfuel pump is the fastest and easiest way to get it in tho...

You grind down half of the short end of the allen, i keep forgeting the size of the allen.
The fill plug is tight, so you'll need a wrench or small pipe for leverage to break it loose.

The ZF fluid is a lightweight mineral oil type. I'm not sure if there is a sythetic equivalent.
I would only reccomend the fluid offered by Jag. I'll see if there is a cheaper alternative for fluid.

I should probably do a write up to make it easier for you guys.

I look forward to your "how to" Hopefully complete with pix! Anyways, cheaper isn't exactly what were after, we want better...As momo posted, he used a synthetic in his last/other car as they are superior to natural...Heat is what kills a tranny, simple physics state if you reduce the heat and you will increase tranny life. Synthetics lubricate better, thus reduce friction, thus reducing heat. Too bad one can't add a trans cooler and a full synthetic...On a sealed for life unit, may not be worth especially if you're like me and have a warranty you don't want to jepordize.

Probably a stupid question, but if you need to grind down the short end of an allen wrech to get the fill bolt off, how the hell do you get a tube in to fill it? Must be a pretty tight fit and it seems like it would be hard to tell if you have the right amount of fluid in. Also, are you guys not measuring the temp or is there some way to do this w/o the Jag scan tool? Thanks again!
