Transmission Replace? P0860, P1582, P1643
Had my car in for a service check today, I was thinking the transmission was going out on it. The independent garage (not Jaguar) ran diagnostic checks on it and came back with the following:
P0860
P1582
P1643
And stated I needed to replace the transmission.
I've read almost all the threads for these codes, but have not seen what was the final solution. The car seemed to drive a little better coming home, but I did not "get on it". Any advice on where I should start or what I should do? They quoted me $6,900 to replace the transmission, which I thought seemed awfully high. I called a local shop and they said they could rebuild it for $3,500-$4,500 which sounded reasonable, but I don't have any experience with them.
Car is a 2003 S-Type R with about 173,000 miles on it. Not sure if the transmission has ever been serviced, I purchased it used and have had concerns attempting this myself and have not found a local shop willing to do this with the amount of miles on it.
Thank you!

What kind of symptoms are you experiencing? Those codes seem to lean towards a TCM or J-gate problem more than an internal transmission issue. It may just need re-programming. As always, check the battery first.
Could just as easily be a wiring (harness) or connector problem.
If you haven't, grab (see stickies) the free codes PDF and/or JTIS and see for yourself.
Decide if you want to DIY. Stay away from any mechanic whose idea is a trans replace on so little data.
