2002 S type.
3 major issues:
1. Requires up to three tries to start car. Uses 93 Grade fuel consistently. Changed Fuel Filter twice. Sometimes starts if throttle pedal is pressed to floor while attempting start. Any suggestions?

2. Headlights started flickering while driving. I am going to check the relay if I can. I also may attempt to check the steering column lever for loose wiring or connectors. Any other ideas?

3. Transmission issues. Will not go into "Drive" without first pulling down and around to 1st, 2nd or 3rd to engage Transmission. If put into Neutral, requires pulling around J-Gate again. Reverse can be the same occasionally.

If I solve any of these issues, I will post the solution here.

 

1. when you have the accelerator pedal pressed to the floor this is known as wot {wide open throttle} when starting with wot, NO fuel is allowed to the cylinders. What size engine 4l 4.2l or 3l.

You should start it without touching the pedal at all.

2. check the condition of your battery and the earthing points along with fuses and wiring.

3. sounds like a stretched cable, what is your vin as the were 2 different gearboxes used in 2002.

 

OK, so VIN decoder shows 4.0. Suffers from bore wash Yes, a work-around can be WOT. See threads on here if you want to now more.

You'll have the Ford 5R55N box. Plenty of threads on here for its fairly few known issues such as stretched shifter cable, interlocks, low fluid, spring failure. All fairly cheap to fix.
