Default Turn signal problems

I am having difficulty with my Jaguar S Type 3.0L 2000 turn signals.

Much of the time the turn signals do not work. On the driver side, about 70% of the time the exterior turn signal will not work and the flashing lights on the instrument panel will not display/flash. The other 30% of the time the turn signals work.

On the passenger side, about 40% of the time front turn signal will work while the back does not work and therefore the instrument panel signal is double speed. About 50% of the time neither signal works and the instrument panel does not display.

The remaining 10% of the time the turn signals work properly.

FYI, the hazards work without issue.

I am assuming this is a turn signal switch problem but I am not sure where the switch is and if I can simply clean the switch.

I have purchased electronics cleaner from the auto store and would like to try to clean before I invest in new switches.

Can anyone tell me if Im on the right track and explain step-by=step how I would locate and clean the switches?

I have taken off the lower dash cover but am not sure where the switches are.

Also, I checked the bulbs and the bulb sockets and they seem to be in good shape.

You might do better by studying the circuit diagrams and how the various things operate (perhaps described in JTIS, which also has the circuits).

There will be some help at www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepairElectrical.htm or http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepair.htm

OK. I opened the lower dash panel and the steering column. When I examined the electronic connections (dont know which was which), I noticed one of them had a "gel-like" brownish/pinkish substance around the connectors. I cleaned the receptacles with electronics cleaner and q-tips and then reconnected everything.

I am now getting steady signals on both the front and back of the driver side. However, on the passenger side, the front works fine but the back blinker does not work at all.

Even more puzzling is the fact that the passenger (right side) instrument blinker does not run double time which you would expect when one or both of the signals aren't working.

I checked the bulb and its fine and the bulb socket is clean.

I have not checked the fuses but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
