Hello fellow Jaguar owners my name is Adam. I bought a used 2005 S-type 3.0 and i have a good 100,000 miles before the engine goes and in the mean time i plan to save up to, and if possible, put a v8 or v12 in. The S-type is my first ever car so i am fairly new to working on cars. I am asking you for any information that may be helpful and beneficial on this engine swap. So please feel free to start discussions and to provide anything that you see as it may be helpful to me. I know i need specs, pricing and if i basically need to build the car from the ground up? So once again please feel free to comment and give any information that may be useful as we embark on this mission. Thanks!

There has only been one "finished" engine swap and that was a Toyota 1JZ turbo-six into an old S-Type, but it's a bit mythical...

For a first ever car, don't do it unless you have endless time and also money. You'd learn a lot but it will also cost far more than you can imagine. Now, if you have both then go for it and there will be people with ideas but first be sure about those two prerequisites!

How much do you think it would cost me for a v8 or v10? Just a simple estimate is fine please. I have a few thousand saved up and time isn't a problem. I at least have a year or 2 before the swap so i want as much information as possible to weigh out my options.

I'm in England and have no idea! But you'll need a new set of computers. Look at the JTIS Electrical Guide and you'll see how they all connect and share messages, so you'll need to change everything. Dash, fuel pumps, lights, ABS, etc etc. Some of the wiring, too. Overall this is a huge task that not even experienced members have achieved.

 

There is a retrofit kit available on eBay where you can install a Saturn V rocket from the Apollo era into the vehicle. Some modifications are required.

 

I think the fuel alone would be a mite costly for me, sadly. Might also struggle to get it passed for legal road use.

 

Tony, looks like you may be onto something! Below is a fine example of adding more HP and prolly easier to accomplish than your plain ole' V10/V12 engine swap into a "modern" S Type platform.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is not a phishing expedition...

But with a car as complex and expensive as an S-Type there is no practical likelihood that you will be able to do anything but replace the engine with the exact same thing.

There are too many separate electrical components on the fiber-optic data network that have to all agree with each other at start time for this to work. There are no known alternatives to the existing engine management system so you will never be able to "teach" the car about another engine or transmission.

Don't want to rain on your parade, but you need to know if something is even possible before venturing in too far.

When/if your 3.0 gives up, you'll be happier (and not end up with a big lawn ornament...) to simply search for another 3.0

If you have a few thousand saved up and still want an S Type.

The STR is 400HP with a SC V-8 and they are a cheap performance car.

I still cannot believe in this day and age people are asking about putting another engine in a car. What are they going to do for throttle control? Hook up an old Snapper mower cable to the butterfly on the throttle? Where will the master computer connection go, the one that controls the alternator and power distribution? Let me guess, just tape that off with 3 rolls of electrical tape and push it down beside the strut tower.


How about a retrofit of an old Ford 2.3L Pinto engine into the S Type for better fuel economy?


How about a retrofit of a GM 350 diesel into the S Type for extra smoke and clatter?

 

Usually it's someone keen (good) who doesn't know much yet (it happens!).

It's a pity to have to disillusion them but hey.

 

Here is a more economical way of going. One of these some Gorilla tape and a Bic lighter!

 

Thanks I realized this a big project and plan on buying a new jaguar, any suggestions? but I still want to make this a project happen and basically build the car from the ground up if possible I know this will be an overly prolonged journey and have people doubting it already but I plan on making it happen.

 

These people are trying to give you very good advice and save you a lot money, work and heartache. Please listen to them.

Sell the car you've got and buy the car you want. You'll be way ahead in the end.

 

You are right. My apologies to everyone if i came off disrespectful in any manner. I love the S-Type body and love my car i just do not want to see it go already but just wish for me power in it. Any suggestions on the next new Jaguar i buy?

Yes, as someone else said, find the newest lowest mileage STR

No I am the sorry one. Listen, I bet you can find fellow member Tijoe here and talk to him. He like many started off as enthusiastic as yourself. His project is going on 3-4 years. Although he had time when he started the project and a pocket full of money, he has gotten caught up in life, or life caught him.

Hell, even may be offer to purchase his half way finished project S Type and be WAY ahead of the learning curve, but you would still have a long road before it sees the road.

I'm adding my vote to getting a low mileage STR. You can have a car that's immediately driveable and sorted out. If you do insist on modifying it, you can do an ECU upgrade, a pulley upgrade, a port and polish of the blower and add in some hi-flow cats. There are numerous STR owners on this forum that have done some or all of the above noted modifications with good results.

A while there was some message traffic about a guy making turbo kits for the 3.0 V6 but I don't anything really came of it.
