Default V6 S Type dumb running, MY findings, and annoyance

First up, this is teh Black 3ltr, just purchased. It has 83K kms, 8/2000 build date, with a late "L" vin #.

Impeccable service history, and one owner.

Intermittant stumbling at idle, and at about 80KPH, so reading all the threads on here the last month, the infamous vent hose HAS to be the culprit, along with plugs??, coils etc.

EDIT 27/12/13: There were NO codes. Read by 2 independents and the Jag dealer. Although the car was running very ordinary, no one could retreive a code of any sort. Glad i spent soooooo many years with V12's, no OBD port, just plain simple diagnosis, one thing at a time.

However, there is a receipt for the replacement of this hose in March 2013. So must be plugs and/or coils.

So today, INTO IT.

"B" bank first, easiest. Mmm, someone has been here before, as the 2B coil securing stud has a stripped thread. Not happy., Plugs were OE Motorcraft.

Scuttle panel off to do the "A" side.

Upper manifold off, 4 more bolts are lower off, and YES, the hose is NEW, as is the one further up on the pipe, good.

Lower manifold refitted with new gaskets.

Upper inlet gaskets removed from the packaging. Looked once more at the "old" ones, coz since the hose job the car has done 3000kms, and maybe they are still OK. HAHAHA, wrong as you can get. I reckon they are the originals, and closer inspection found pieces missing, all on the top side. No idea how this could have happened, as a scraper is not needed to remove the manifold, or the gasket unit (these are the earlier one piece gaskets), which simply lift one as one unit.

Photo shows one of the piece missing, and obviously the reason for the strange running.

IMT o/rings checked, and new updated already fitted, but I did them again, just because.

All back, and what a transformation.

Totally different car, much mumbo, and smooooooth as a V12, really.

Obviously, as I have said before many times, there a mechanics, and there are mechanics. This hose job was done in a dealer for the previous lady owner.

Now to do "her" Silver S Type, bet it is the same, as the stumbling is more steady than mine and getting worse, so the hose is possible toast.

Yep interesting indeed Grant. I cannot tell you how many times throughout the years guys (ahem mechanics) ask if they should replace the gaskets after removing the plenum or lower intake.

In my opinion its not worth the couple of bucks saved, especially the aftermarkets are very reasonable in price.

Could be a way to buy a car cheap, knowing it's a quite easy fix if you're OK at DIY.

When garages are failing to change gaskets, I hope they stay off any tough jobs!!

Thanks guys.

Just edited the post before someone chimes in about "codes", as there were NONE.

"Hers" tomorrow, after work, let the fun begin.

Agreed.

I paid very little for this one.
