You don't say what model you drive but on my XK8 the facility is switched on and off by pressing the button on the end of the lighting stalk. Continue pressing to cycle through 'range', 'average fuel', 'inst' and 'average speed' then back to 'odometer'.

INST Fuel = current fuel consumption calculated at three second intervals which is why it will be continually changing.

Er... I wasn't "having a go", just hoping to provide a pointer to where the details are
(which I think the OP realised)
BTW, the loose gas cap sets codes because USA law requires it, under pain of huge fines for the car makers. The law makers are trying to reduce harmful emissions and the gas cap was a source of them.

I really appreciate the answer. I'll try to fix this when I get back in the car. I'm new to this site but I drive a 2005 S Type and love my S Type Jags. I just don't have a dealership or anyone very knowlegeable about Jags to ask around our area so----here I am! Thanks again
Where in NC are you at? I'm in the Raleigh/Durham area and can help you out if you every have any problems. I've helped a few members on here. I also have an ELMScan in case your check engine light comes on again I can pull codes.

I seemed to have expanded my repair hobbying to other vehicles now. Our buddy Joel has a CTS now and have already helped him with a headlight bulb replacement which required a front bumper removal. Been working on Civics, Troopers, Saturns and bikes. Maybe I wont have to work a job during school.
