Default What to look for

I have an XK8 and am looking at buying an S-type for a commuter car. I have a pretty good feel for all the quirks and faults on the XK8. I assume the S-type has similar things to look out for. Is there a certain model year where things were pretty much shaped up?

Your input is valued.

Thanks,

DaveC

We also have an XK8 and an S-Type. Our S-Type is a fantastic highway cruiser, and that's exactly what we purchased it to do. First, read the FAQs at the top of the S-Type section. You'll quickly learn that you'll be better-served with a 2003-and-newer model. My research in December 2008 convinced me to stick with a 2005-or-newer model. Then, you'll need to decide among the STR, the 4.2, or the 3.0. Because of the supercharger, an STR will cost you more to maintain and insure, as you would expect. If a normally-aspirated V8 is fine, get the 4.2. If a V6 is fine, get the 3.0 (more of these were shipped to the U.S. so you'll have a wider selection to choose from). The 3.0 gets slightly better gas mileage. Good luck with your search, and let us know what you decide to do....

Looking at a 2003 with <30k miles. 4.2 engine. Asking $12,900. That seems a little high. Am I right?

Absolutely. Several thousand dollars too high. Put on your deal-kicker boots and see how far down you can move the price....

They'll struggle to sell it at all because the perception is not to buy a jag. That means you can drive a hard bargain.

Over here I'd be nice but firm with a low offer and then just leave them my phone number. They can call or not.
