What should I pay for a 2004 S-Type?
I am looking at stepping up from my X-Type to an S-Type. The Jaguar dealership I am working with has a 2004 Jaguar S-Type. Features are a 4.2 V8, Alpine Stereo, 57k, clean inside and out, and CD changer. They are asking $16,950 for the car. I will be trading in my X-Type and they are willing to give me $5300 for it, which I think is fair and is about what the trade in value is. I need some advice since the Blue Book value (KBB) is $17000 and the Edmunds and NADA values are around $13000 to $14000. I will be purchasing a warranty as well. So my question is, would offering $13000 be an insult or would it be justified? Just wanting some opinions from S-Type owners.
Thank you,
Will

Go back to kbb.com and take a look at the trade in and private party prices, not just the blue book price. $17k seems a bit high (even in Calif. dollars). If they insist on their price, get them to toss in an extended warranty ...at no extra cost to you.
My local dealer is running an 05 S-Type 4.2 with 42K miles at $16900. The ad doesn't say if it's certified or not, but, I doubt if it is at that price. I think your dealer has got some room to deal with you.

thanks for all the advice. i ended up lowballing them at $13500 and after 2 hours of negotiating (the salesman going to the managers office), i got the car for $13500. I got a 3 year warranty that was similar to the one on my x-type (3 years/36k) for $3600. I think I got a great deal.
Congratulations on the new ride. I did the same thing you did back first of this year. I swapped my X-Type for an 06 S-Type 4.2 VDP. The V8 S-Type is so much quicker than my 3.0 X-Type was that it took me about 2 weeks to stop grinning. You'll also discover that your new ride will get much better fuel economy than your X did.
