Default Wheels for S Type

Hey all, I just got an 03 S Type Jaguar. I'm interested in upgrading to some aftermarket wheels. Does anyone know what would be thett best combo to go with? I'm not sure how wide of a wheel you can go with.

The Driv Vixen wheels look sexy. Do they come any wider than 8.5 though? Just curious. Do you know if the center cap can be replaced for the aftermarket Jaguar center cap?

No and yes. I don't think wider than 8.5 and you'll be rubbing with most sizes of rubber. Caps are easy to mess with.

Okay just making sure. I hadn't seen anything that came wider than 8.5, but I know prior to owning this car, my car was a Lexus SC400, and you can go a considerable amount wider. About how much would a wheel+tire package cost for the setup. You wouldn't happen to have any photos with the wheels on the car would you?

XJR wheels get my vote as well. However those Vixen's look hot too. I wouldn't go wider the 8" if you want to have passengers at some point. I also wouldn't go bigger than 20's, and even then, you'll be rolling on rubber bands and leave the rim very unprotected. I would opt for some 19's and 40-45 series tires instead of 20's and 30-35 series tires. The ride quality will be A MILLION times better with 19's. Either way, if looking for after market wheels, go with nothing wider than those 8.5's and I'd try to get 8's if I were you. Keep em on 245/40's or 245/45's and remember the lug pattern is 5x108

My plan wasn't to go higher than 20's at all. I was thinking maybe 18 front and 19 rear, or 19's all around. I had considered 8.5 for the rear, but I hadn't decided whether or not to go staggered yet. I'm interested in upgrading, but I don't want to sacrifice TOO much ride quality.

I like the way you're thinking. You're on the right path to some nice rims that are right for the car.

LOL thats the idea. I want to make sure my car looks like art work (by the way our cars are the same color =D) I was thinking maybe 18 X 8 front and 19 X 8.5 rears. Anyone have any objections to that? I haven't seen too many wheel combos for the S Type so I dunno what works best.

What about tyres? does anybody have any preferences? My car has Dunlop SP Sport 5000's all round and the fronts are shot.

What is everybody else running?

Thats another issue I haven't looked into too deeply yet, but once I decide on a wheel, I'll be getting more into that. I passed a thread on another Jaguar forum you might want to take a look at. Might find it useful to give some of the tires they mentioned some though.

Toyo Proxes or ANY Michelins get my vote for rubber. Bibendum is the man.

I personally would keep them either 19's all around, or 18's all around. You'll find out that when all four tires are the same, you usually get a discount. Not like 50% or anything, but $50 here and there help out. As for tires, options are endless and if you ask for advice you'll be WAY more confused than before you started.

I still have plenty of time before I actually purchase my wheels though so I'm still considering the options. A lot of people advocate getting the same size for the ability to rotate diagonally as well. But seeing as how I want the staggered look with wider tires in the rear I don't think it should matter too much either way.

Rotating tires is not a good thing to do. It's an old layover from the days of yore when Grandfather had his car serviced.

Rotating tires masks suspension issues that show premature wear or damage. If you have one tire wearing badly and you rotate, you don't really address why the tires need rotating. Replace/rotate tires as you see fit, but I don't do it and never have. If I wear out fronts fast I'm braking too hard orthe car is understeering too much and I need to balance it out with different settings/adjustments. If the rear is wearing out too fast I'm too lead footedor I have to adjust/set etc.

Yes, if you buy specialised tires you'll end up having to replace all 4 if they aren't available anywhere. Mixing tire type isn't a good idea either unless it's frontor rear sets, not corners replaced.

Now if all four tires are wearing well and there are no obvious signs of premature wear, you can rotate but it's a bit of a wasteof time.

Your mileage may vary. Cheques will not be honoured. No warranty implied, etc.

I agree with Cosworth on rotating tyres. Its not something I have done myself except for one time. The only reason for doing this was that the fronts wore out quicker than the rear as you would expect and it was only to delay the cost. Although it did mean that I had to buy 4 tyres later instead of only two[&:]

I'm aware of the fact that rotating tires/rotating diagonally is an outdated practice. I was simply stating that some people may still use the process in order to retain tire life. I for one don't do it either (I have a history of heavy braking and fast acceleration so my wear patterns are ALWAYS unbalanced). Just wanted to raise the issue for thought as far as possible things to think about when deciding on how wide/large to go with purchasing tires.

20" Sepangs look pretty hott , as far as rubber goes I def give my vote to michelin if you dont mind spending the $$ . I had pilot sports (OEM) on my 7 series and loved them but decided to try the new Cont. Sportcontact3s and havent been as happy with them. My R has Toyo Proxes F1 Rs i believe is the correct model. They came on the car brand new when i bought it, they are good and have a nice tread pattern but im not impressed at all, they seem a little too casual in the handling dept. for my taste. For the money you cant beat Kumhos, they are almost half the price of the Toyos and were rated higher by consumer reports on pure data not subjective testing. My Jeep (GC Limited 4x4, HO V8) that I sold at teh beg of the year had michelin all terrains ( same as escalade n range rover ) I put on. I loved them but i had to replace them right before I decided to sell it. Put on kumhos that gave 85% of the performace and ride quality, low noise etc at 1/3 of the cost. Hope this helps lol!
