where is the backup speaker on a 2000 S Type?

I just finished dismantling the parcel shelf behind the rear seat looking for the backup speaker and it is not there. So where is it? I am now assuming the manual I am using is for a later model than my 2000.

There is a small speaker just above the ignition key. Would that be it?

Because all of my sensors are clicking I am assuming the module and the sensors are okay and that just leaves the speaker.

mines a bit newer , however my reverse speaker is under the parcel tray in the rear window .
sounds more like a sensor fault .
you can scan for chassis codes and recover a code for failing sensors .
using icarsoft i930 or ids/ssd .

I considered buying a new module because I could hear the sensors clicking but was not getting any sound. A seller in England advised that if the sensors are clicking the problem is not the module---so that leaves the speaker.

I take it that you can see a visual speaker imprint on the parcel shelf somewhere. My shelf has a sun blind incorporated in it and it also has three what look to be tie-downs arranged along the front end of it---none of these were evident in the manual diagrams---and there was no evident speaker location.

It has been an interesting exploration. Just hope I can get everything back together without breaking any brittle plastic bits.

parking aid sounder
That small grill above the ignition lock is ac sensor. The black plastic parking aid sounder should be located beneath the parcel shelf at the center. Try to see if there's markings of removed aluminum studs used to secure it. If there is no speaker (beeper) then look for the small 2-pin wire connector from the harness (wiring loom) that runs below the rear window. The wire colours are white and brown, they come from the big grey connector (RF34) behind RH headrest. If you have the roof switch at the roof console switchpack, you should have the sounder also. You can see the sounder at center of sheet metal parcel shelf body on attached photo. It may have been removed due to aftermarket parcel shelf with sun shade, or it was never there because of poorly retrofitted parking aid system. Or the previous owner hated the sound and couldn't figure out how to disconnect parking aid module harness connector (it's locked with swivel. It rises off when you lift the swivel around it).

Location of parking aid sounder
Any 12V beeper should do as spare.

Thank you Jaggster! I have put everything back together but I did have two leads that were disconnected when I had the shelf out. One was on the passenger's side of the parcel shelf. The other was about in the region of the beeper shown in the picture. They are both two pin connectors. I checked the colours on the latter and I thought it was black and white but it could have been brown and white. I led it through a hole in the shelf and it is hanging in the trunk now. I will try to get a beeper and give it a try.

I didn't notice any evidence of removed aluminum studs but I was looking for signs of a traditional speaker and might have overlooked the missing beeper marks.. I will take a look today and see if there are any holes that could have contained the studs. There is nothing on the fabric shell of the shelf to indicate speaker holes so I take it the beeper is loud enough to penetrate through the parcel shelf board/fabric. I also take it that the aluminum tangle to the right of the beeper in your picture is the mounting bracket. Do I have that right?

The sun shade does not work either. Perhaps the other lead has something to do with that. I looked for a female side to that two pin connector but could not find anything within its range. So I decided it must be there for an option that is not available on my car. I did have to disconnect the sun shade in order to remove the shelf from the car but that connector was a four or five pin connector. I also inadvertently disconnected the defroster connector while I was removing the shelf and it too was a two pin connector.

I am going to post some pictures of the rear seat and shelf removal and perhaps the evidence for the beeper will show up there.

Bob

p.s. this kind of puzzle is what I enjoy most about messing with cars. I could be doing crosswords but I like the physical side of the exercise and getting something working is always a great satisfaction. Much more fun than a finished crossword that I throw into the wastebasket!

-The sounder is loud. There should be no holes on parcel shelf board.
-There is no mounting bracket. That is one of two (never seen these before) aluminum studs used to secure the sounder directly to the metal body. Your car should have the holes for that.
-The other two-pin connector is for the nav or phone antenna, that is my guess.

-Fold down RH rear seat. Open the plastic latch that secures the RH extension padding of rear seat (that doesn't fold with the seat). Look behind the padding. There is a 3-way male gray connector near the latch facing up. If it's not connected, or the connection is self-made, your shade is not connected to the roof harness, or the connection is made wrong. Black is ground, middle is battery, third is switched power on the male pin connector. Do check that you have functional switches for the sun shade and the parking aid on your roof console. There may only be blank cover, if you have either of those accessories poorly retrofitted.
The reason why there can be self-made female connector is that prefacelift sun shade has 3-way connector, the 5-way connector shade is for s-type 2002->. So I think someone put wrong shade on your shelf. And maybe took out the sounder if the wrong shade needed room..?

I have some pictures of the seat and parcel shelf removal and I will try to attach them to this post. I followed the manual's instructions and removed both the vertical seat squabs and the horizontal seat padding and the C pillar coverings in order to access and remove the parcel shelf which was attached by three beige plastic push pins along the front, three bolted down rigging eyes along the top [ to strap in a child's car seat], and three nuts along the bottom. I am hoping the pictures will show one of the connectors you have been telling me about.

I had to remove what I am calling the two seat squabs by undoing the ten mm nuts at the bottoms and by then pulling up on the squab until I could get a look at the latch mechanism. I then was able to figure out that the U shaped male end [protruding from the squab] was being trapped by something and I jigged around with it until it came loose. I could not move the latch from the top because I could not see it at all. I tried but no success. Once I saw the latch setup was the same as the latches at the front of the seat cushion I thought I had it made for the second squab. But guess what! The second latch was upside down to the first one! That cost me another half hour of figuring to guess how I could unlatch the mechanism. I am going to produce a set of directions on all these various latches, etc. in another post.

I have ordered a cheap beeper from China [only seven dollars delivered] and I plan to mount it on the trunk side of the frame beneath the parcel shelf. . If it doesn't work I won't be out any serious money.

Passenger side female latch component. Can you see the connector you have been referring to?

Child seat LATCH-system was introduced in 2002 or later on Jaguar, so that may be the reason why you have that later model parcel shelf there. I guess they changed lower rear seat also? Is there openings for child seat anchoring points just behind the hip of the passenger? The seat mounting bracket is anchored there 2002->.

I think thats the black sounder harness connector, loose in front of brake light on your photo.

You may want to tuck it under the parcel shelf from one of the openings on sheet metal body. There's not much space on the trunk side and there is no protective edge or body forms there.

Sun shade harness connector beneath the RH C-pillar. Gray 3-way connector. From left to right: switched power, battery power, ground
For some reason, there seems to be only two wires there, going down (to the removed parcel shelf?) on the photo. It's white retainer is similar on all connectors. Remove and disconnect. See if there's three wires, or which is missing. Switched power comes from the roof console switch pack and gives the power to relay to rise or lower the shade, therres no voltage unless switch is pressed. Battery power is always 12V and ground leads to the ground loop . Trace where it is leading if not to the sun shade.

Child seat LATCH-system was introduced in 2002 on S-type. You probably have 2002 rear seat also with child seat mounting brackets just behind passengers hips (4 holes ).

I think that is the sounder connector

That is the sun shade roof harness connector

Tuck it back under the parcel shelf once connected. It will be caught on luggage in the trunk.
