X-type backup sensor
Hi guys, I'm not sure if someone has already posted a thread about this as I tired to search for it but was unable to find anything.
So the topic is my backup sensor on my 02 x-type 3.0 sport. As some of you may be familiar with this car I have the 5 speed. When you put this car in reverse it has backup sensors on the bumper that "beep" when something is behind you, so you don't back up into any objects. My problem now is that when I go into reverse, even if there is nothing behind me most of the time the car will frantically "beep" as if there is something there. I get out and check but there is nothing, I'm not even close to a curb. Sometimes it will just hold one solid "beeeeeeeeeeeeeep" until I shift out of reverse. Do you guys know how to fix this problem? It's not a huge issue but it's extremely obnoxious and I would like the backup sensors to work properly when there's something I might actually back into.
Thanks guys. -Red

Red, from the sounds of things, you have a sensor that is starting to fail. When you get the long tone, it is telling you that there is a problem with the system. When you are getting this long tone, that is when you want to put your ear next to all 4 of the sensors and see which one is not clicking. That will be your faulty unit.
Thanks again thermo for the knowledge! Any idea on the cost of fix? And you said I want to put my ear next to the sensors to find the faulty one. Does someone has to be sitting in the car with it in reverse?
Red, if you go through an online dealership (Jaguarparts.com, JPLV, or Hennessey), you should be able to pick up a brand new part for around $75 plus S&H. You can find them on e-bay (for example) for around $40 plus S&H. Just be cautious on e-bay as there are 2 different versions of the sensors out there and they cover the 02-early 04's and then 04+. So, pay attention. This is where spending a little more at a dealership, they will give you want you truely need. Also keep in mind that the outer sensors and the inner sensors are different (one as a straight plug, the other has a bend in the plug).
As for having someone in the car when in reverse, as long as you set the e-brake, you should be fine. Turn the ignition to RUN (do not start the engine), shift the tranny into reverse, and then get out of the car. If you are not sure, block the wheels just to make sure.
