Will a V6 Lincoln LS transmission work in a 4.0 S-Type?
I have a 2001 S Type 4.0 that I bought in June. I drove it three weeks and the transmission went out, and it's been out of commission ever since.
The original plan was to rebuild the transmission with help from a friend who said he's done this before.
I work 50 hours a week, and haven't had a lot of time to work on it. Now, the friend who was helping me has moved, and his old landlord wants my car gone.
The gearbox is still in pieces, and my patience is about gone. I just want my car working.
Plan A is hitting up a junkyard, and finding a used gearbox to stuff in it. This will probably be a $500 short term fix. The most common source of 5r55n transmissions I can find are V6 Lincoln LS's. Any reason one of these won't work in an S-Type with a 4.0 V8?
Plan B (and the one I'm leaning toward despite the hit to my credit card) is this:
00 02 Lincoln LS Transmission rwd 3 9L 5R55N | eBay
Professionally rebuilt and shipped right to my door, with all the known weak spots addressed. Again, it's advertised for a Lincoln LS, but surely it will fit a Jag, no?

There are no shortcuts here. Installing a transmission for the V6 in a V8 will result in early failure if it will even shift. The computer expects different values for a transmission for a V8.
Your best approach is to have everything towed to a transmission shop and have yours rebuilt.
Used transmissions, even if a perfect fit, are a waste of money.
