Smile Xenon headlamp in Halogen car.... ?

Hi everyone,

Are the connectors for the halogen headlamp unit the same for the xenon unit?

I assume the main beam and side lights are the same but what about the dipped (low) beam. Same for halogen bulb and HID bulb ?

Reason is that I want the S-Type R headlights on my Sport. Basically just to get the blacked out reflectors.

Or am I better off, just separating the lenses from my halogen units and the xenon units and swapping??

Cheers
Tris

The HID ones have auto-level sensors (two), dedicated control module, high-voltage circuit, etc. No way a straight swap. See elec diagrams in JTIS

Cheers, thought as much.I've got my hands on a cheap set of S-Type R housings, so looks like I'll be better off separting the lenses and using the blacked out parts in my original headlamp. My JTIS disc is on the fritz at the mo - I need a new one :-(thanks mate,Tris

Yes you can put the whole assembly in. The connectors are the saem but the triggers to turn on hids are negative and they always have power to them. The negative ground circuit is switch on/off. Halogens are the opposite. So you just have to clip a couple wires and add relays in to trigger the gground for hid and thats basically it. Yes there are no leveling. But the leveling is not to dip the beam to oncoming traffic. Theyre there when you have the trunk loaded and the back of the car is down. How often do you drive like this? Otherwise the headlight have to be "manually set for the correct hieght" the auto leveling does "not" ill repeat. The auto leveling does "not" set a correct level. It only keeps the level that is "manually" adjusted by you at the housings. If you point them to the ground or sky, the levelers will only self level to these preset heights

Brutal - from the thread on the UK forum, the snag over here is it's illegal to fit them unless they are strictly equivalent to the factory ones (apparently the laws say factory fit need to be auto-level, power headlamp washers are also mandated... etc). The laws are strict.........

I thought about doing it as well, but it sounds like it's not worth the effort.

Thanks Brutal, that's some helpful info there.

What happens to the manual level adjustment inside the car for the halogen lamps if I performed this mod? Would that manual levelling become redundant?

And would there be any errors flashing up on the dashboard relating to the lamps?

Cheers

Thats on the wrong side of the dash!!! Isnt that hard to reach over the console to operate
seriously though thats pretty cool and your normal headlights non hid must have leveling motor in them in which case you should be able to fit them up without issue on the leveling motor. I cannot imagine jag changing that portion between the 2 assemblies. Just the triggers, just compare the wiring to each and see what pins are in what pin connector locations. And are the mot guys sooooo knowledgable that they would catch that you fitted a differant option to your car that came on your model? Or just look at it and think it came that way?

I don't think they'll notice.

And I'll be putting the halogen bulbs into the projector lens anyway, so there's no legal issue there. As long as the beam pattern is ok and doesn't dazzle then the MOT chappies should be happy.
It's passed the MOT for the past 3 years with the Philips blue vision bulbs in which are marked for off road use!! So I think I'll be fine, lol.

It's the aftermarket hids that are a no no.

I'll give it a try anyway, the xenon housings are only costing me £15 gbp for the pair !!!

Thanks for the help and advice.......

Btw, the controls are on the "right" side..... lol

Yes is is on the right side. Thats not the issue. Its the damn steering wheel is over there too
on the hid and halogen housings. Where the bulb mounts, the metal housing is differant. Halogens in a hid housing cant be done. Why not use the hid as built. The light is wayyyy better. So much so that i have converted every car i own to projector hids. My 96 vdp i mounted stype hid projectors into 98 xj8 clear glass lights. And my trunk i bought aftermarket projectors for the headlights, and mounted stype projectors in place of the factory fog lights.

Tell me about it, it makes the car awfully difficult to drive I can tell ya.

I'd like to put the factory hids in, but what I'm getting only consists of the housing and lenses. No ballasts or bulbs.

So say that I could get the halogen mounted in the lens. Could I theoretically connect up and it would work? Providing I change the connections as you mention above.?

Hypothetically of course.

Don't get me wrong, I do want xenons, but don't have means.

At the moment, I just want those black surrounds on my headlamps like the s-type R has

You can buy an aftermarket kit with bulbs and ballasts to make those functional as hid. You would have no idea theyre not factory then. Check ebay or several other suppliers. Just get a kit designed to replace the jaguar factory hid bulbs. Those kits are generally start at $100us

Is there a thread about this lying around here somewhere?
