This is the XJ8 (X308) forum, but the engine is the same. There can be several causes for ) in one cylinder, but one of the most common is a dropped valve seat due to overheating. If you have a 4.0 L engine a blown head gasket could also be a strong possibility.

Please visit the new member area and introduce yourself and your car:

+1 ...the valve cover is somewhat easy to remove and physically observe that cylinder valve action with the help of an assistant. After you introduce yourself, then you may wish to go to the regional section and if it is what RJ says, then check on if there is a reliable shop to get the work done local. I would post such there and in this thread to get as much eye on it as possible.

The S-Type R has the 4.2 litre AJ33S, not the 4.0 litre AJ28 used in the earlier cars.

Good advice on removing the cam cover and inspecting the valve action as the engine rotates. This should only be done in a clockwise direction ,when standing in front of the vehicle, using the crankshaft pulley bolt to rotate the engine by hand.

The only way to repair such damage as a broken/dropped valve or valve seat is to remove the engine from the vehicle and disassemble it to see the extent of the damage. If a valve has broken, it may have severely damaged the piston and cylinder wall as well.

Here is a link to the cylinder number protocol:

Hi J,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

I have moved your thread from the forum for the X308 to the forum for the X200, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 2003 S-Type R. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars, but you've already received some excellent advice from our friendly and helpful members.

Cheers,

Don
